Don.’s Arrival in Jersey City Heights

OZU’s owners, Claude and Shinako, alluded to a new Japanese restaurant opening in OZU’s place in the Heights in their original closure announcement this past May, saying the new spot would likely open later that summer. Just a few days before, they posted on @ozufoods Instagram that they were searching for an architect for an “as-built plan,” which is a model or drawing showing the exact dimensions and conditions of a building after construction.

We now know that Don. is officially in its soft opening stages at 106 Hutton Street. The restaurant serves authentic Japanese donburi, a dish typically made with rice and various fresh toppings, including vegetables and sushi. Don. has five donburi options on the menu, including Blue Fin Tuna Don, Salmon Don, Special Chirashi Don, BBQ Eel Don, and Salad Don. The ingredients for each bowl can be found on the website here, and prices range from $16 to $36. The restaurant’s hours as of now are Thursday through Saturday from 4PM-9PM. We have reached out to the Don. team and will update this post with any additional comments.

What Was There Before: OZU Foods

Having opened in the fall of 2015 almost 10 years prior, Ozu quickly made itself a favorite among Heights locals, boasting seasonal Japanese cuisine with an emphasis on healthy ingredients — and some vegan options.

Ozu’s owners posted on their Instagram about the closure and their upcoming move to Japan back in May, noting that a new Japanese spot would be opening later that summer in Ozu’s place (which we now know is Don.)

“We are sorry to announce that Ozu Foods will be closing, as we plan to move to Japan. Our last business day will be this Saturday, May 25th. We would like to thank all of our customers for supporting us throughout the years. We will miss you all.

A new Japanese restaurant will be taking over the space with a late summer opening.

All the best & much thanks,
Claude & Shinako”
