Summer has officially given way to the change of Fall but that doesn’t mean life gets any less exciting in Hudson County — we’ve rounded up all the news you might have missed when it comes to the goings on in Hoboken + Jersey City. Sophie’s Nail Studio Officially Opens in Jersey City

Hoboken + Jersey City are home to so many annual local activities — and this weekend marked another (albeit newer) tradition. On Saturday, September 10th from 12PM to 6PM was the 3rd annual Bergen Square Day Festival. Held in Journal Square at the intersection of Bergen Avenue and Academy Street, the event included all of the family-friendly fun you’d expect from a bustling historic Journal Square community. New Jersey Becomes the 1st State to Teach Climate Change in School

New Jersey is making headlines this week as it becomes the first state in the country to officially start including climate change as a part of its public school K-12 education curriculum. The New Jersey Student Learning Standards, which provide learning goals for each grade across different areas, now officially include climate change education. First Lady Tammy Murphy had been advocating for this change, and the initiative was first adopted by the New Jersey State Board of Education in June of 2020. Click here for what we know.


Hoboken Fall Arts + Music Festival is Happening in October

Hoboken’s Arts & Music Festival, which last happened in May of this year, is coming back for the fall season and is already under a month away. It will be happening on Sunday, October 2nd from 11AM to 6PM on Washington Street from Observer Highway to 7th Street. This free event will include over 300 artists, crafters, makers, local businesses, and food vendors. There will also be two performance stages where local musicians will perform. Barre3 to Open in Jersey City

Barre3, a national barre studio that has more than 170 locations in the U.S., has given entrepreneurs and fitness enthusiasts the opportunity to own a studio. In the coming weeks, the owner of the new Jersey City studio, located at 10 Provost Street, will be hosting pop-ups throughout Jersey City, including the Farmer’s Market. A newsworthy development for all pilates lovers, a new Club Pilates will be opening at 171 Morgan Street in Jersey City. Club Pilates has more than 750 studios nationwide and provides low-impact, full-body workouts using various equipment. Classes are offered for beginners all the way up to professionals. Bayonne Pays Tribute to Fallen JC Police Department Hero

On Saturday, September 17th, the Bayonne Police Department will pay tribute to Jersey City detective Joe Seals who was killed in the line of duty in 2019. According to NJ.com, his actions related to the event of his death were credited with preventing a mass shooting from claiming more lives. The memorial service will take place from 2PM to 8PM at DiDomenico 16th Street Park in Bayonne.


Plans for Liberty Science High School Continue

On Tuesday, September 6th, the Jersey City planning board reviewed the most recent plans for Liberty Science High School, per Jersey Digs. The high school is part of the developments plans to transform the 14th acres of land near the Liberty Science Center. The three-story high school would be at the center of the property, located at 153 Phillip Street.


The 2022 Hoboken Italian Festival Continues Through 9/11

The 2022 Hoboken Italian Festival began on Thursday, September 8th and continues through Sunday, September 11th. The 2022 festival features delicious eats, entertainment, and more, including fireworks and a procession. The festival is taking place on Sinatra Drive Promenade between Newark Street and 2nd Street. Yelp Names Marty’s Best Cheeseburger in New Jersey

In a recent article, NJ.com reported that Yelp ratings have decided Marty’s in Jersey City has the best cheeseburger in New Jersey. The Instagram post says, “According to Yelp, you can find it in two North Jersey locations. The popular restaurant review site recently posted a list of the best cheeseburger in every state. Making the cut for NJ was Marty’s, a burger shop with stores in both Fort Lee and Jersey City.” The restaurant is located at 488 Central Avenue in Jersey City.


Brooke + Bel Opens Renovated Boutique in Hoboken

Brooke + Bel, a local clothing and accessories boutique in Hoboken, recently took to social media to show off its newly renovated space. The post says, “The moment you’ve all been waiting for… THE BIG REVEAL! Say hello to the new and improved Brooke + Bel, and we are open for business TODAY! Come stop in – we missed you all!” As of Wednesday, September 7th, the shop is open for business.


Bond Vet Clinic to Open in Jersey City

Brooklyn-based @BondVetClinic will soon open at the base of 351 Marin Boulevard in Jersey City. JC Families shared the news in a post, which reads, “The full-service veterinary clinic will [offer] a variety of services which includes urgent care, routine care, vaccines, spay/neuter, and more. Bond Vet has locations throughout New York City, Boston, Long Island, and Washington, D.C.” An official opening date has not yet been determined.


Cinnamon Rolls Return to Hoboken’s The Hive

The Hive, located at 1000 Park Avenue in Hoboken, has built a reputation for delicious cinnamon rolls. Sold only on Saturdays and Sundays in limited supply, the sweet treat has become a local favorite. Last week, the coffee shop x play space announced the cinnamon rolls would officially return this weekend starting Saturday, September 10th.


Madison Pizza Lab is Officially Open in Hoboken

After teasing its opening date on Instagram, Madison Pizza Lab — Hoboken’s newest pizzeria — has announced that it’s officially open. Located at 152 Newark Street, Madison Pizza took over Verizza Pizza’s former spot. The owner of Madison Bar and Grill, Dave Carney, moved into the space a few months ago and is now ready to unveil his latest venture to locals. The spot announced on Instagram on September 7th that it was officially open this week for walk-ins only — and that delivery + take-out would be coming soon. KLADO Opens New Space in Jersey City

On Wednesday, September 7th, the Brazilian dessert shop KLADO took to social media to announce the opening of its new location in Jersey City. As of Friday, September 9th, the shop is open for business. The post reads, “We’re settling in to our new space and we can’t wait to have you guys come check it out.” The brigadeiro shop is located at 135 Erie Street in Jersey City.

As of a week ago, a new restaurant has officially opened in downtown Hoboken. Located at 102 Sinatra Drive, The Lola serves brunch, lunch, dinner, and some of the most beautiful cocktails we’ve ever seen. Open Sunday through Thursday 12PM to 12AM and Friday + Saturday 12PM to 2AM, The Lola takes tropical-inspired cocktails to the next level.


Jersey City to Award $1M to Organizations Backed by Politicians

Approved by the Jersey City council this week, two organizations backed by local politicians will receive $1.1 million in grants. According to NJ.com, Team Walker, run by Commissioner Jerry Walker, will receive $800k toward the construction of a 28-unit building. The second organization, AngelaCares, headed by Assemblywoman Angela McKnight, will receive $314K for new headquarters.


Hoboken Shop Owner Dies at 98

The owner of Hoboken Antiques on Washington Street, Arnold Stern, died this week at age 98. According to Patch, Stern was a World War II veteran and was very involved in the Hoboken Historical Museum. The museum released the following statement: “Arnold and his wife Dora, who settled in Hoboken in the late seventies, opened an antique store on Washington Street, and were some of the earliest residents of the Shipyard after they moved from their restored brownstone. Arnold was a WWII veteran and a chemist, but we knew him as a funny, warm, and gentlemanly person, a true sweetheart.”


Memorial Service to Remember 56 Hoboken Victims on 9/11

On Sunday, September 11th, Hoboken will host the Annual Interfaith Memorial Service to remember Hoboken residents who lost their lives in the attacks on 9/11. The event will take place on Pier A next to the City’s 9/11 Memorial at 2PM. Click here for other 9/11 events in Hudson County.


City of Hoboken New Hire to Focus on Improving Homeless Services

The City of Hoboken recently announced it will soon be hiring someone full-time to aid the city’s longtime homeless population. According to Patch, the funds for this new hire are part of an initiative included in amendments proposed for the city budget earlier this year. The new position will work in conjunction with the Hudson County Social Services Department.


Hackensack River Officially Named a Superfund Site

On Wednesday, September 7th, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that the Hackensack River has been declared a Superfund site, per Patch. This designation means federal funding will go towards cleaning the river, which currently tests high for lead, arsenic, chromium, mercury, and polychlorinated biphenyls.


Hudson County Pedestrian Dies After Car Collision

On Tuesday, September 6th, a North Bergen pedestrian was struck by a vehicle and according to Patch, was pronounced dead an hour later. The North Bergen Police Department was notified around 5:54AM of a car accident involving a pedestrian in the area of Tonnelle Avenue and 69th Street. The victim, 64-year-old Angel Ruano was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 6:47AM.


YMCA Princeton’s Cancer Resource Center to Host Annual Art Show

On Thursday, October 6th, YMCA Princeton’s Breast Cancer Resource Center is hosting its fifth Annual Beyond Pink Art Show. The event celebrates local women living with, through, and beyond breast cancer through art, most of which is created by women participating in the BCRC’s Healing Arts Program.


City of Hoboken Secures Funding for Multi-Service Building

The City of Hoboken has secured $300k in funding to begin the process of reimagining the community center. The amount included in the 2022 municipal budget would cover better services and upgrades to the building, including a complete redesign which the public has been asked to share thoughts on.


Pedestrian Safety + Infrastructure Take Spotlight in Hoboken Construction

Local officials announced that Hudson County will begin construction this week on pedestrian safety improvements and traffic signal upgrades at the intersection of 14th Street and Hudson Street in Hoboken.

Local tech company Propelify announced information for this year’s Propelify Innovation Festival, reported Patch. The event will take place on Thursday, October 6th at Maxwell Place Park in Hoboken. Hoboken’s ‘First Street Sundays’ to Start This Weekend

As summer gives way to fall, we say goodbye to Summer Streets and instead welcome First Street Sundays  — a Hoboken program that closes off First Street between Washington and Park Streets once a week. This seasonal initiative creates a car-free zone for pedestrians + encourage residents to visit local businesses. Mask Mandate Lifted for PATH Train

On Wednesday, September 7th, New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced the end of the mask mandate for public transportation systems, which includes the PATH Train between New Jersey and Manhattan. According to Tap Into, the end of the mandate also applies to the bus, the Subway, airports, and indoor terminals. The mandate is still in effect in New York within adult care facilities and other health facilities under the purview of the Department of Health.


Hoboken Italian Festival Launched Fireworks Saturday

At 9PM on Saturday, September 10th the Hoboken Italian Festival celebrated with a fireworks show over the Hudson River. According to Patch, the festival — also known as the Feast of the Madonna dei Martiri — started on Thursday and runs through Sunday, September 11th.


Route 440 Construction Extended to 9/19

Emergency sewer repairs have closed Route 440 in recent weeks, and due to the weather, the project is being extended, per NJ.com. While the original plan estimated 14 days, portions of Route 440 will now be closed through Monday, September 19th as the teams work to repair the pipework which is more than 100 years old.


Jersey City Redevelopment Announced as Joint Venture

Toll Brother recently announced that the redevelopment project at 151 Bay Street in Jersey City is now a joint venture with Sculptor Real Estate, per Jersey Digs. Located in the Powerhouse Arts District, the 34-story building will feature 259 units and a 550-seat community theater.


Pizza Twist Opens New Location in Jersey City

Pizza Twist is opening a new location in Jersey City, per Jersey Digs. The restaurant, formerly known as Chicago’s Pizza Twist, is a West Coast-based pizza shop known for its Indian fusion pies. The new space will be located at 10 Provost Street. Pizza Twist has another Jersey City location at 2 Journal Square which opened about two years ago.


Citibike Brings Back Valet Service to Hoboken Terminal

Last week, the City of Hoboken announced the return of a Citibike valet service. The service allows residents to commute to and from the terminal more easily during morning and evening hours by eliminating the need to find open docking space at the River Street docking station during peak times. The service is free to all Citibike riders.


Hoboken Raises $41K to Support Family Following Apartment Fire

In just one day, 500+ donors have contributed over $41,000 to support David Hernandez, who works in Hoboken as a security guard at Northern Soul Kitchen & Bar and CVS for 15+ years. His Jackson Street apartment caught fire on Sunday, September 4th, and while the family is safe, they lost all of their belongings. A GoFundMe account has been created to further support the Hernandez family.


Mindful Power to Host Free Intensati Class 9/20
