Hoboken Partners with HERO Campaign to Promote Designated Driving

On Tuesday, May 19th, Hoboken leaders and representatives from public safety and state government joined the HERO Campaign nonprofit to announce a new partnership aimed at reducing drunk driving through designated driver initiatives. On Tuesday, May 19th, Hoboken became the first municipality in North Jersey to join the John R. Elliott HERO Campaign, a nonprofit dedicated to preventing drunk driving through the promotion of designated drivers. During the event, the Hoboken Police Department unveiled its new HERO Campaign vehicle at 106 Hudson Street.

Mayor Emily B. Jabbour joined Bill Elliott, founder of the HERO Campaign, to officially launch the campaign in Hoboken. Hoboken becomes the first municipality in Northern New Jersey to partner with the campaign. 

Attendees included HERO Campaign founder Bill Elliott, Schmitty’s bar owner Amanda Schmitt, Police Chief Steven Aguiar, Public Safety Director Ken Ferrante, New Jersey Office of the Attorney General Division of Highway Traffic Safety Director Michael Rizol, State Senator Raj Mukherji, and Congressman Rob Menendez.

Founded by the family of Navy Ensign John R. Elliott of Egg Harbor Township, the HERO Campaign was established in his memory after he was tragically killed by a drunk driver in 2000, just two months after graduating from the United States Naval Academy. Since its launch, the campaign has helped contribute to a 20% reduction in alcohol-related fatalities and incidents in New Jersey over the past decade.
