All About Made of Leaves

Made of Leaves is a whimsical boho-chic event florist based in Jersey City Heights. Yoga teacher-turned-floral artist Meghan Kramer started the business as a creative outlet during the pandemic.

However, the seeds were planted back in 2019 as Meghan and her now-husband James were planning their wedding.

Hobbs Inc

“From saying yes in February of 2019 to saying ‘I do’ in August 2019, the turnaround was quick. Vendors seemed to be out of the question. So, when it came to the flowers I decided this would be something I could conquer myself, beyond my bridal bouquet from a local florist…and with the help of family and friends,” Meghan told The Hoboken Girl.

She picked up a few buckets of wildflowers from a local New Jersey flower farm and — despite not having any prior floral arranging experience — crafted centerpieces and beautiful displays for her bohemian backyard wedding.

“From that day I instantly fell in love with floral arranging,” Meghan explained.

Just a few months later, Meghan and James both found themselves out of work as the pandemic set in.

“Through the ins and outs of the pandemic, I longed for a creative outlet. On a grocery run to Trader Joe’s, I decided to purchase a variety of flowers to brighten up our home,” she shared.

Meghan began handing out arrangements to friends and family members but after dropping off a mini bouquet at a local yoga studio, things really started rolling.

“The owner loved it and asked me to host a pop-up. So I did. And boom! I mean, BLOOM! We sold out,” she said.

After the first pop-up, Meghan began selling her bouquets outside of yoga studios and coffee shops. She honed her skills by working with some other talented floral designers and, little by little, her side hustle turned into a full-time gig.

“It started with a close friend’s wedding and this one little “yes” led to another and eventually our apartment was filled with flowers. Flowers were everywhere! The living room. Kitchen sink. Bedroom. The bathtub. We cleaned out our main closet of clothes and dedicated it to hard goods, tools, shears, tape, and beyond,” she explained.

It didn’t take long for Meghan to realize that her business had outgrown the apartment. She found a studio in Jersey City Heights and took Made of Leaves full-time.

“We have now been in our beautiful studio for one year!” she shared.

“If you had told me three years ago that I was going to be a florist and own my own business I would not have believed you,” she said. “Now, I feel so lucky to be a part of our clients “BEST DAY EVER!”

The arrangements are often inspired by nature and potential clients can brainstorm with Meghan to find the perfect floral designs. She told us that her “books are currently closed for 2023 and 2024 is filling up fast.”
