In Jersey City, ice cream shops and coffee spots are plentiful, but an interest in finding really great local doughnuts is on the rise. Luckily, The LoDG opened its doors at 7 Bleeker Street in The Heights and JC residents are grateful that they did. The shop was founded by a couple who happen to be a biomedical engineer and a lawyer, which is how the name — The Law of Donutgineering — came to be. On Friday, February 2nd, this charming addition to the sweets scene announced its closure, effective February 11th. Keep reading to learn more about The LoDG in Jersey City Heights and its closure.

About The LoDG + its Closure

The LoDG first started as a pop-up inside Hoboken’s Hudson Coffee. Eddie and Flav, the couple behind LoDG, wanted to fill the craft doughnut void in the Heights and opened a storefront on 7 Bleecker Street in Jersey City in 2020. The shop was a popular destination for residents and visitors, with its frequently changing menu a perpetual draw.

The shop announced its closure via an Instagram post. Co-owners Eddie and Flav thanked the community for their support and invited fans to come by one last time. “To all of those that never came by, you’ll have another chance. This isn’t the last you’ve seen of the Donutgineers.” See the full post below. The Hoboken Girl has reached out to the team to find out more about their future plans and will update this piece when we hear back.

The Menu

The LoDG team whips up new, unique flavors all the time and they even welcome suggestions from potential doughnutgineers. Some standouts from the rotating menu include:

  • Berry, Berry, Berry Sprinkled — Fresh triple berry glaze topped with rainbow sprinkles
  • Boujeebery Cake — A traditional blueberry cake donut drenched in a fine vanilla bean glaze
  • JC Cream — A fluffy yeast doughnut stuffed with a velvety chocolate custard and dipped in a rich brown butter glaze
  • When Life Gives You Lemons… + Blueberries — A fluffy blueberry cake topped with toasted lemon meringue + a fresh blueberry
  • If a Donut Falls In The Forest — A twist on a black forest cake

The menu also includes some vegan and gluten-free options with past flavors like:

  • Latino Cruller (V) — A traditional cruller tossed in a cinnamon-sugar, churro blend
  • Departed Holes (GF) — A collab doughnut with Departed Soles Brewery. A fluffy vanilla cake, covered in berry jelly and topped with a fresh berry

Mystery boxes and day-old doughnuts, drip coffee, espresso drinks, and hot chocolate are also available. You can even order food items like:

  • Do-Nut Touch My Chicken — Cajun, buttermilk fried chicken topped with creamy gouda and smothered in a spicy maple aioli served on a glaze-drizzled doughnut
  • Avocado Boats — Smashed avocado on a French baguette boat topped with a fried egg, scallions, honey, and cracked pepper

The Vibe

Team HG has been to LoDG a few times and the staff is consistently welcoming. Everyone we’ve encountered has been friendly and has not hesitated to explain what all of the different flavors are (and there are many).

There are a few tables and chairs plus a bar at the window where you can sit and enjoy your treats. When HG visited on a weekday morning last April, we had the space to ourselves since most people seemed to be stopping in to pick up online orders. It’s also not far from Riverview-Fisk Park and Washington Park if you want to take your donuts to go and enjoy some sunshine.

Our Thoughts

the lodg

The LoDG is a lovely local spot with unique doughnut flavors you can’t find anywhere else. It’s obvious how much the founders love what they do and their passion and attention to detail shine through in the delicious doughnuts. We love that the flavors change seasonally and are often relevant to pop-culture events — we’re just sad we missed the Everything Everydonut All At Once flavor back in 2023.
