Our Hoboken Girl of the Week this week is, well, the sh!t. Jen Gonzalez {better known as Doody Free Girl} is Jersey City’s go-to for colonics and all things related. She even writes for Hoboken Girl, makes her very own candles, and is overall a boss babe to admire. Learn more about her and her business below:

About Doody Free Girl, according to Jen:

Doody Free Girl is more than a colon hydrotherapy practice, but a virtual refuge (DoodyFreeGirl.com) for anyone struggling with bowel issues or confidence in the bathroom. At Doody Free Girl, I administer gravity colonics, the fastest and most gentle way to flush and detox your bowels. At DoodyFreeGirl.com, I blog about my own bathroom experiences and difficulties for the sake of helping readers combat bathroom anxiety and hopefully inspiring them to just let their shit go. No one should be robbed of the pleasure of a satisfactory bowel movement.

What Inspires Her

My family is my biggest source of inspiration. I come from a legacy of hard-working immigrants and entrepreneurs who have always encouraged a positive attitude, creativity and strong work ethic. My grandfather opened a successful market in Cuba with his brothers that was unfortunately taken from them by the Communist regime. My parents continue to run the successful insurance agency they founded in North Bergen over 40 years ago. My brother now runs the family insurance agency and has turned this old-school mom-and-pop shop into a modern, technologically savvy business. His drive, passion for continued education and insight has motivated me my entire life. I’ve always admired my cousin, a Cuban immigrant, not just for being the only doctor in the family (she has her own pediatric dentist practice in Miami), but for being a solid, reliable person in general. My [future] sister-in-law, an Indian immigrant and award-winning entrepreneur, started a sewing factory in Union City, where she proudly provides around 100 local jobs that are typically outsourced in Asia. Inspiration literally surrounds me.

What Motivates Her/Keeps Her Up at Night

My clients, potential clients and those suffering from bathroom anxiety keep me motivated. Nothing keeps me up at night, I can fall asleep anywhere!

Hobbs Inc

Goals + Passions

My goal is to write a bathroom book that will encourage folks to take their time on the pot.

A Typical Day in the Life

My schedule varies every day. Most days I have generous breaks throughout the day that allow me to go to Jivamukti yoga or take a trampoline class at Jane DO and maybe squeeze in a chiropractic adjustment with Brian Corrigan (walk-ins only!). Otherwise, when I’m not seeing clients, I’m generally writing or trying to think of inspirational blog posts or newsletters to send my clients. After work, I generally go home, make dinner, play with my cat and force my boyfriend to watch Bravo.

The Highs + Lows

Highs: I get to do what I love and be myself completely: no fancy clothes unless I feel like it, no censorship, no boss, no bullshit.

Lows: It can be physically taxing, which only gives me an excuse to take a nap or get a massage!

Highlight of Career {So Far}

The highlight of my career so far has been the acknowledgment I’ve received from female-owned businesses I love and admire: Hoboken Girl Blog, Kimberly Snyder, CAP Beauty, Jane Do, Sakara Life and Poopourri.

The highlight of my life so far is opening Doody Free Girl. I’ve never felt this kind of purpose and freedom before. The most rewarding part of my job is providing a service that provides instant relief to my clients.

What a Day Off is Like

On my days off, I like to catch up on sleep, go to yoga, get vegan brunch somewhere with my boyfriend, and lounge or go on adventures which could mean shopping, volunteering, hiking, traveling or surfing. I love spending time with my cat, the television, family and friends (in no particular order).

Advice to Someone Trying to Pursue the Same Career Path

Only pursue a career in colon hydrotherapy if your heart is in it. If your heart isn’t in the right place, you definitely won’t be able to handle the times when you are literally shit on.

Hoboken + Jersey City Favorites

What is your favorite restaurant in Hoboken or Jersey City?

Hoboken – Charritos DOWNTOWN (the vegetarian one, of course)
JC – Subia’s Organic Market

What is your favorite place to shop in Hoboken or Jersey City?

Hoboken – Anthropologie

JC – Love Locked – I cannot walk in there without purchasing jewelry, ceramics, sage or air plants! Also, I sell my bathroom candles there 🙂

What do you love most about Hoboken?

Aside from its charm, I love that Hoboken is world recognized for its rich history. I keep learning more every day. For instance, Hoboken was known to Native tribes as “the land of the tobacco pipe.” Many badass women were employed during WWII by the Shipyards and other industries. Hoboken is the birthplace of baseball and Frank Sinatra. It also houses Stevens Institute of Technology, one of the oldest tech schools in America and the first one dedicated to mechanical engineering. I still have so much to learn!

What is your favorite thing to do in Hudson County?

Get together with my family anywhere – we are all in Hudson County!

How long have you lived and/or worked in Jersey City?

I moved to Jersey City from Brooklyn in September 2014 and officially opened up Doody Free Girl in April 2015.

What is your favorite outdoor place to spend time in Hoboken/JC?

The Brunswick Garden where I have a garden plot. It’s so peaceful there during the day and I’m obsessed with checking on my tomatoes, radish, beets, and carrots. It’s the perfect spot to read a book amongst the flourishing produce, bees, butterflies, and flowers. I call it the magical garden because it’s even more mystical in the evening during lightning bug season.

What is your favorite place to work out in Hudson County?

Jivamukti Yoga, Jane DO, Powerhouse Pilates

Where do you go out with friends in the area?

I like grabbing dinner and drinks with friends at Pet Shop and catching a show at White Eagle Hall every now and then. I like the original White Star Bar on Brunswick Street near my work because the staff is super friendly and they are always open when I need a drink after a late night at work!

What is something you think needs to come to Hoboken or Jersey City?

A vegan diner like Champs in Brooklyn {and more vegan spots in general}. I would love to see 100% vegan, chemical-free nail/hair/makeup salon.
