Amidst the disappointing news that the beloved Choco Taco has officially been discontinued, a local Hoboken taco spot has decided to create its own version of the summer treat. That’s right — Fat Taco, a taco + tequila bar located at 32 Newark Street in Hoboken, has added its own version of a Choco Taco to its menu — and it’s been a huge hit so far. The Discontinuation of Choco Taco
Just last week, Klondike — the creators of the Choco Taco — announced on its website the discontinuation of the widely popular treat. If you weren’t a Choco Taco kid, the treat is made from a sugar cone ‘taco’ with vanilla ice cream in the center, topped with peanuts and chocolate.
“The Klondike Choco Taco has unfortunately been discontinued in both 1ct and 4ct pack sizes,” the site reads. “Over the past 2 years, we have experienced an unprecedented spike in demand across our portfolio and have had to make very tough decisions to ensure availability of our full portfolio nationwide.”
Fans took to social media to mourn the loss of a dessert that dominated so many childhoods — and many of the Tweets have been pretty hilarious.
But not all hope is lost. This enormous response on social media gave Hoboken-based Fat Taco the idea to create a homemade version to add to the menu.
All About Fat Taco’s Choco Taco
Fat Taco co-owner Gary Yip told Hoboken Girl that the team was inspired by the huge response to the discontinuation of Choco Taco.
“We thought it would be a great opportunity to showcase what Chef Jason Herrera can create in the kitchen, and obviously tacos are our specialty,” Gary told HG.
Armed with the great idea, the team set out to make a homemade version but quickly realized that recreating this popular dessert was no easy feat — and Chef Jason worked tirelessly for hours to make an authentic, delicious version. “We spent hours learning the best technique to recreate it on a large scale,” Gary said. “We made hundreds of them.”
Gary added that it was crucial that Fat Taco created an authentic experience of a Choco Taco — right down to the hand-made shells.
Eventually, Chef Jason cracked the code and Fat Taco recently made the dessert available to the public. As expected, since adding the dessert to the menu, everyone has wanted to get their hands on the homemade Choco Tacos.
“We cannot keep up with the demand. Chef Jason Herrera has been making them nonstop since last week. Every table wants them!” Gary commented.
Fat Taco’s Choco Tacos are currently on sale for $14.99/3 tacos — and Gary told HG that the plan is to keep the dessert on the menu so long as there’s continued demand for them. For now, they’re available as a special for the entire month of August.
