The History

Harborside Sport + Spine

Barsky Gallery was founded in November 2011 by entrepreneur Albert Barsky. Albert is a Hoboken-transplant and has become a well-known presence in the art community. Naturally, Albert too is an artist as well as an established designer in the advertising and marketing field.

Hobbs Inc

“Opening Barsky Gallery was an endeavor to satisfy my passion for the visual arts. I dropped a successful career in marketing and advertising in late 2010 to follow a dream of opening my own business,” Albert told Hoboken Girl.

He single-handedly created his website, designed his gallery, runs the social media platforms, and is the sole-person executing all of the services the gallery offers. He independently chartered his career path and it turned out to be a very successful one.

Since founding the gallery, Albert has worked tirelessly towards his vision of “creating a channel that supports his passion for contemporary art, connecting art enthusiasts with largely unseen local and international talent, while helping corporate clients, architects, and designers to obtain eclectic museum-quality pieces,” he explains. “The gallery prides itself on being a go-to establishment for both art admirers and serious collectors.”

Why open an art gallery in Hoboken? Simple. Location, location, location.

“With Hoboken being the newest center for young professionals on NJ’s gold coast, it seemed to be the perfect fit for my vision,” he says. “The demographics are perfect, and the onslaught of recent hi-end developments creates more opportunity for new buyers.”

The Atmosphere

With limited visitation due to Covid-19, trust us when we say that the gallery has an airy, modern design. The 15 ft. ceiling with gray and white walls serve as the perfect canvas to hang the artwork on. With 1,100 sq. ft., the spacious room allows visitors to move about freely while marveling at the paintings or mingling at a private event on a finished concrete floor. Conveniently located on the ground level of one of building a 150-year-old factory the gallery is less than 15minutes from both the Holland Tunnel and the Lincoln Tunnel. For drivers, there is a parking lot across the street that charges $2 an hour.

The Art

Barsky Gallery showcases contemporary art from around the globe, from small decorative pieces to large-scale investment art. The gallery was opened with a specific theme, “Destination Hoboken,” Albert explains. “This meant that it became a gateway for local artists to strut their stuff. The gallery continues to bring together an exciting roster of talent across a diverse range of media but has expanded to include artists from other regions and countries,” he shares.

With access to a multitude of artists, some of the inventory is stored off-site and appointments are the best way to ensure the opportunity of viewing all of the pieces you are interested in. The art is accessible, and the gallery works with all budgets.

The gallery offers a “Trade-In Policy” that allows you to trade in your unwanted art towards a new piece, essentially saving money while purchasing new art. The Trade-in estimates are confirmed after their buyers see the item in person. There are no guarantees on any trades. Some items carry no trade-in value, but the team is willing to extend a 10% discount towards anything in the gallery and arrange for a donation to a local charity.

The Events

The Barsky Gallery team’s motto is “if you can celebrate it, we can host it.” The gallery is available to rent for intimate and sophisticated dinner parties, celebrations, and art-inspired private events. Some of the social gatherings previously hosted include birthday parties, baby showers, bridal showers, engagement parties, holiday parties, charity galas, intimate weddings, fashion shows, and more.

Corporate gatherings are also a big hit at this loft-style, commercial gallery. Events like panel discussions, workshops, retreats, and luncheon have taken place there, accommodating any full audio/visual capabilities. The chic venue holds up to 60 guests.

“There is a BYO- Everything policy in which we welcome any caterers of your choosing with local recommendations on hand if needed. Passed hors d’oeuvres and assortments of small-bites work best,” Albert notes. The gallery even offers a selection of furniture should your event need some.

If you happen to need a stylish backdrop for your next photoshoot or video, the gallery is available to rent on an hourly or daily basis.

In addition to hosting private events, the gallery has also hosted a few public ones. “Barsky Gallery has supported community-based events by offering their venue for cultural organizations, and nonprofit events,” he tells us. They often host public exhibit openings for locals to check out artists and the latest collections.

After Purchasing Art

After you purchased the fine contemporary art piece of your dreams from Barsky, a professional Barsky Gallery installer will come out to your home or office to assist you in the optimal placement and secure installation of your newly acquired art. Have a special spot where you’re looking to hang the perfect piece? The gallery offers a complimentary one-on-one consultation and advice and is committed to finding you the ideal solution to fit your budget, space, and taste.

There is also the option of sending an image of your space and the team will digitally place ideas for art into your space to give you a feel for how it would look, making it easier for you to decide. If you are drawn to a particular artist in the portfolio, you can work with the gallery and artist to commission a custom piece.

For those who are hesitant to purchase because of the uncertainty that the piece will be the right fit, you can take the piece home on approval for a 24 – 48-hour decision-making process. Lastly, every painting needs a frame, and Barsky Gallery has a large selection of moldings for you to choose from to enhance its beauty.

Barsky Gallery is so much more than a beautiful room that showcases art. It’s a full-service experience where the founder himself works with you every step of the way to find the artwork of your dreams. Just as impressive, Albert offers the perfect venue for any occasion and teams up with you to ensure its success.
