Owned by husband-and-wife duo, Bill and Maren Schmitt, Schmitty’s is a dog-friendly sports bar with an adorable outdoor space. Earlier this year, the team went hard for Croatia’s EuroCup games, taking over First Street as fans watched the games on a projector (see post above).
The Shepherd + The Knucklehead | 1313 Willow Avenue
The Shep is perhaps uptown Hoboken’s best-kept secret (if it is a secret at all). Located right across from Trader Joe’s, this family-friendly spot has an impressive beer and food selection. Hoboken PATH Station Fully Closing for 25 Days Starting 1/30
Hoboken’s PATH station, located at 1 Hudson Place, will fully close on January 30th for various repairs. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) announced the news on October 31st, 2024 saying that the station will close to complete critical track + switch upgrades and station rehabilitation work as a part of the two-year PATH Forward program. The closure will take place from late evening on Thursday, January 30th, 2025 through early morning on Tuesday, February 25th, 2025. Click here for more.
The Hoboken Girl’s 5th Annual Puppy Bowl Contest — NOMINATE YOUR PUP!
We can’t think of a better reprieve from the frigid dog days of winter (pun intended) than kicking off The Hoboken Girl’s 5th Annual Puppy Bowl Contest. This year, HG has chosen two organizations that contestants can donate to. This includes Wise Animal Rescue, local to New Jersey, and Ace of Hearts Rescue, based in Los Angeles. While Ace of Hearts Rescue is not connected to the Hudson County area, we want to show our support while the Los Angeles area recovers from the devastating wildfires. Sopranos Actor Joe Pantoliano Visits Augustino’s in Hoboken with Daughter
Joey “Pants” Pantoliano, a Hoboken native and Emmy award-winning actor, best known for his role as Ralphie Cifaretto in The Sopranos, enjoyed dinner with his daughter, Daniella, at Augustino’s in Hoboken on January 16th. He shared via Instagram a selfie with Daniella while sitting at their table. In the caption, he shared that he also ordered lasagna for his other daughter Izzi. Isabella 'Izzi' Pantoliano is a Hoboken resident and a stylist at Bond Hair Salon.
Hoboken Councilmembers Ramos + Presinzano Announce Plans for Recreation Program
Hoboken First Ward Councilman Paul Presinzano and Fourth Ward Councilman Ruben Ramos announced on January 21st plans for a summer recreation and learning program. Per the Hudson County View, the proposed program would include recreation such as sports, outdoor games, and arts, and hands-on learning activities like STEM projects, creative writing, and leadership workshops. Local Italian restaurant Otto Strada, located at 743 Park Avenue in Hoboken, suffered a fire in the building on Tuesday, January 21st in the evening. The Hoboken fire department was quickly on the scene and helped the restaurant put the fire out quickly. Red Bull Arena in Harrison Announces Name Change to 'Sports Illustrated Stadium’
Red Bull Arena, the 25,000-person sports venue in Harrison, New Jersey, is now known as Sports Illustrated Stadium as part of a 13-year contract between the New York Red Bulls and Sports Illustrated. The stadium will remain home to the New York Red Bulls and NJ/NY Gotham FC. The name change was first announced in December 2024. The Ben and Jerry's ice cream shop at 405 Washington Street in Hoboken suddenly closed its doors and papered over the windows this month. Per Patch Hoboken, a spokesperson said it will reopen this week but no specific date was given. We will share updates as they become available.
New Early Learning Center, Greatness Grows, to Open in Hoboken

Greatness Grows, a new early learning center in Hoboken, announced on Instagram it is hosting its grand opening on February 2nd. There will be guided classroom tours exclusive discounts, giveaways, and kid-friendly activities. The daycare center is owned by Gianna Peraza, a public school teacher and local resident, and will serve children ages 0-5.
James Gandolfini New Jersey Parkway Service Area to Reopen Soon
The Garden State Parkway service area named after James Gandolfini, the iconic actor who played mob boss Tony Soprano, is expected to reopen this month. Per NJ.com, this ends a seven-year, $250 million project that rebuilt or renovated all the service areas on the state’s two largest toll highways. The James Gandolfini service area was originally expected to reopen around July 4th, 2024, but remained closed because of soil contamination discovered during construction, which halted that work while the pollution was remediated. When it reopens, the service area will have Dunkin’, Burger King, Auntie Anne’s, Nathan’s, and an Applegreen market.
NJ Transit Providing Discounted Passes for Students This Semester
NJ Transit is once again offering its “Buy 3 Months, Get 1 Month Free” promotion for both full-time and eligible part-time college students beginning with the February student pass purchases. Per NJ.com, students traveling via NJ Transit’s bus, rail, or light rail systems will get a 25-percent discount on an already discounted monthly pass when purchased on the NJ Transit mobile app. In addition to full-time students traveling to and from the campuses of participating regional colleges and universities, part-time degree-seeking students taking at least two courses are also eligible for the student pass fare. To qualify for the “Buy 3 Months, Get 1 Month Free” promotion, a student at a partnering college or university must buy a student monthly pass via the NJ TRANSIT mobile app for three consecutive months: February, March, and April of 2025. February student passes went on sale on January 19th and will be available through February 10th.
Jersey City Fire Damages Tommy's Brooklyn Pizza + Displaces Residents
A fire in Jersey City damaged a pizzeria and displaced several residents. Per Patch Jersey City, firefighters responded shortly before 4AM on January 23rd to 308 Pacific Avenue in Jersey City. The two-story building, including Tommy's Brooklyn Pizza, a cigar store, and three apartments, was suffering heavy fire from the pizzeria and up to the apartments. The roof began collapsing as firefighters fought the blaze. The Red Cross is assisting with the relocation of two adults, a child, and a dog who escaped. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
Hoboken’s New Tanning Salon Opens in Former Big Fun Toys Space
In 2022, Big Fun Toys, a family-owned toy shop on Washington Street, closed its doors for good after a 20year run in the Mile Square. In its place comes a pretty far cry from the games and toys that were — according to signage outside that we noticed back in August, a tanning salon chain was slated to take over the space. Ticket Sales for Jersey City’s First Ever Pizza Fest Open 1/29
Jersey City Happy Hours announced via Instagram that its first-ever Jersey City Pizza Fest will take place on Saturday, March 29th from 1PM-5PM. Ticket-holders will tour around Jersey City to sample pizza from some of the best spots in Chilltown, think bar crawl, but for pizza. Each ticket earns a half slice of pizza from every participating vendor. A portion of each ticket will benefit a local Jersey City non-profit. Tickets for the event go on sale Wednesday, January 29th at 12PM here.
Hoboken Mayor Issues Statement on Federal Immigration Policy Enforcement
Hoboken Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla issued a statement via a Nixle alert describing how the City would respond to changes in federal immigration policy. "Our priority remains in ensuring the safety, dignity, and well-being of all our residents, regardless of their immigration status. Today, I reaffirm Hoboken’s unwavering commitment to being a fair, welcoming, and inclusive city for all who call it home. Everyone, regardless of immigration status, is protected under the U.S. Constitution. "
Pariwaar Delights Opens 2nd Location in Hoboken in Former Mikie Squared Space
A Jersey City-based Indian food restaurant has officially put down roots in the Mile Square. Pariwaar Delights, which currently resides at 827 Newark Avenue in Jersey City, recently opened up a second location in Hoboken in the former Mikie Squared space at 616 Washington Street. An eagle-eyed Hoboken Girl reader first noticed signage up at the new outpost on Tuesday, July 30th, 2024 — and the Pariwaar Delights team shared with HG that its newest restaurant is open in Hoboken as of Wednesday, January 22nd, 2025. 15-Year-Old Girl Dies in Jersey City Shooting
A 15-year-old girl was shot dead and a family member was also shot late on the night of January 18th in Jersey City. Per NJ.com, the shooting incident happened in the area of Union Street and Martin Luther King Drive just after 11PM. Responding Jersey City police officers located Cianna Lee, of Jersey City, and a 37-year-old female relative with gunshot wounds inside a motor vehicle on Oak Street. Cianna was taken to Jersey City Medical Center where she was pronounced dead shortly after 1:20AM on Sunday. Her relative is being treated for a non-fatal gunshot wound. The shooting is under investigation and no arrests have been made at this time. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help cover funeral expenses for Cianna.
Hoboken Council to Vote on $30M Bond for Sinatra Drive Seawall Rehabilitation

The Hoboken City Council will vote on the first reading of a $30,324,240 bond for the Sinatra Drive Seawall Rehabilitation Project after investigating a sinkhole near Sybil’s Cave in June. Per the Hudson County View, a portion of the recommended bond amount would include an annual inspection of waterfront structures to avoid the prior neglect of vital waterfront resources that spanned decades. If adopted, the city will seek New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection approvals to begin construction in the Spring of 2025.
City of Hoboken Announces New Agent for Affordable Housing Program
The City of Hoboken announced on January 21st that its new Affordable Housing Program Administrative Agent, Acuity Consulting Services, will oversee the city's existing 62 units of affordable housing and Affordable Housing Waiting List. Per a Nixle announcement, this list determines the placement of households into any of Hoboken's vacant affordable housing units. Currently, there are no vacant units available. During this transition period, applications to the waiting list are not accessible from Friday, January 24th until Monday, January 27th at 9AM. Those interested in applying to the Hoboken Affordable Housing Waiting List or updating information on an existing application should visit HobokenAffordableHousing.com to access the new application portal at that time.
Hoboken Receives Installation of Three New Public Art Pieces

Hoboken just got a bit more colorful following the installation of three new public art pieces that can be seen throughout the city. Per NJ.com, the three new installations include “Hoboken,” a mural by Shantell Martin; “The Flourishing Hoboken Community YarnArt,” a fiber art installation by Carmen Community Artist, and “Charm Harbour,” a sculpture by American artist duo CHIAOZZA. The new works were made possible through the Hoboken Business Alliance Public Art Program funding.
NY Waterway Ferry Tickets Will Be $3 During Hoboken PATH Station Closure
Hoboken's PATH train station is closing for upgrades from January 30th through February 25th. Per Patch Hoboken, the Port Authority is providing transit alternatives in conjunction with other agencies including $3 ferry rides when bought in-person or via an app. Normally, the ferries cost much more than the $3 PATH train, but commuters can get the same price if they specifically buy the "Special PATH Ferry Tickets.” These tickets can be bought in person at the Hoboken, Brookfield Place, or Pier 11/Wall Street ferry stops, through the NY Waterway App, or via the Ride PATH App. Commuters can take the NY Waterway ferries from both the 14th Street dock uptown and at the train station. They will run every 10 minutes during peak hours. Also, a free shuttle bus will operate 24/7 among the Hoboken, Newport, and Exchange Place PATH stations, allowing Hoboken riders to get to the other stations. The buses are ADA-accessible.
Hoboken to Host Community Meeting On Proposed Garage B Redevelopment Plan
A 40-year-old parking garage in downtown Hoboken could be transformed into a new apartment building. The City of Hoboken proposed plans to transform Municipal Parking Garage B at 28 2nd Street in Hoboken into a mixed-use building. There will be a community meeting on Wednesday, January 29th at 7PM in the City Hall Council Chambers, located at 94 Washington Street in Hoboken to learn more about the plan. Click here for more.
Nearly Nude PETA Protest at Whole Foods in Jersey City
PETA protested at Whole Foods in Downtown Jersey City on January 22nd, in an intensely graphic way. According to NJ.com, PETA used fake blood, faux packaging, and nearly nude humans to protest against Global Animal Partnership and what PETA officials call the organization’s deceptive ‘animal welfare certified’ labels (on products) at Whole Foods stores. The demonstration consisted of two women and a man covered in “blood,” lying on giant meat trays wrapped in cellophane — complete with spoof “humane” labels.
Hoboken Public Library Receives Two Awards from NJ American Institute of Architects
The Hoboken Public Library was honored with two prestigious awards during the New Jersey American Institute of Architects Annual Installation and Awards Gala on January 11th. Per the Hudson County View, the library’s Third Floor Children’s Library Restoration received the Built Historic Preservation Merit Award. In addition, Visionary Director, Jennie Pu was named AIA-NJ’s Resident of the Year for her “exceptional leadership and significant contributions to the architecture profession and the community.”
Hoboken’s YogaRenew Raises Funds for No Kid Hungry Organization
YogaRenew, located at 12 Hudson Place in Hoboken raised $440 last week for No Kid Hungry, a Washington, D.C.-based organization, with a special sold-out class. Per NJ.com, the donation-based class was led by Patrick Franco, director of YogaRenew. The event was also live-streamed via YogaRenew’s Ether app, a one-stop destination for beginner to advanced levels that offers more than 1,000 classes, courses and live workshops.
DEP Hosts Event on Progress of Liberty State Park Makeover
The Department of Environmental Protection hosted an open house-style event on January 25th focused on the revitalization plans for Liberty State Park. Per NJ.com, the event took place at Liberty Science Center, 222 Jersey City Blvd. in Jersey City. Some of the topics covered included design plans for the Audrey Zapp Drive corridor, restoration of the historic train shed, and active recreation amenities in the park.
New Jersey Joins 20+ States to Sue Government Over Birthright Citizenship
Two dozen Democratic-led states and cities are challenging President Donald Trump’s bid to end birthright citizenship in court. Per CNN Politics, the lawsuits allege that a Trump executive order signed on January 20th violates the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, which gives a constitutional right of citizenship to all children born in the United States. The order applies to children born starting 30 days after the issuance of the order. The children covered under it are those born on US soil to parents who are either unlawfully present in the US, or in situations where the mother is temporarily in the US, like on a visa, and the father is a noncitizen.

The Common Tern, Hoboken’s Honorary Bird, Now Has its Own Library Card
Back in July 2024, the City of Hoboken passed a designation that officially recognized the Common Tern as the honorary bird of the Mile Square after decades of efforts to protect the bird and its existence in Hudson County. A local advocacy group run by residents, called Our Tern, has since led the effort to protect the Common Tern’s nesting sites in Hoboken, with the help of the new designation. Now, the Common Tern is expanding its influence in the Mile Square. Chef At Razza Pizza in Jersey City Receives James Beard Nomination
Of the hundreds of restaurants and chefs nationwide that were nominated as semifinalists for a prestigious James Beard award, only two were picked in New Jersey, and one is from Jersey City. Per Patch Jersey City, it is Razza, a pizzeria located at 275-277 Grove Street in Jersey City, owned and operated by chef and author Dan Richer. Razza is known for making high-quality wood-fired pizza with locally sourced ingredients.
Hudson Restaurant Week 2025: See the 43 Restaurants Participating
A popular event that allows locals to try out some of Hudson County’s best restaurants is returning for 2025. This year’s Hudson Restaurant Week will kick off on Monday, January 27th, and run through Friday, February 7th. City of Hoboken Welcomes New Transportation + Parking Director
Mayor Ravi Bhalla announced on January 23rd the City of Hoboken’s new Director of Transportation and Parking Steven Weber, who joins the Administration with more than two decades of experience in transportation planning and public policy. Per a City of Hoboken press release, his career includes senior management roles for large cities, nonprofit organizations, and international consulting firms. Following a nationwide search that garnered over 40 applicants, Steven began on January 21st. The Administration will seek the advice and consent of the City Council at the February 5th council meeting.
Hoboken-WTC PATH Service Suspended During Thursday Evening Commute
One week prior to its official closure of the Hoboken PATH station for a month due to repairs, the PATH suspended service on its Hoboken-WTC line. The shutdown took place on Thursday, January 23rd, 2025, during the evening commute. PATH service between Hoboken and the World Trade Center was suspended through the evening rush hour on Thursday due to ongoing repairs, the Port Authority shared on social media. Three Men Arrested in Hoboken for Stolen Mail Key + Checks
Three men were arrested in Hoboken on January 19th in connection with a key that was robbed from a postal worker last month. Per Patch Hoboken, Jacquez McCall, 31, of Paterson, Sean Miller, 30, of East Stroudsburg, PA, and Abdoul Toure, 26, of New York City were arrested in connection with the unlawful use of a stolen postal service key. During an investigation, officers discovered nine stolen credit cards and two bags filled with envelopes and documents containing various names and addresses. A stack of checks for various amounts was also found and police recovered a master key that had been stolen from a postal worker in a robbery in Hoboken on December 19th. Jacquez and Abdoul were released with summonses and court dates, while Sean, who had active warrants out of Elmwood Park and Kenilworth, was taken to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.
Hoboken’s Up + Out Hair Salon Offers Supplies to Local Resident After Fire
A local resident shared via Facebook that she suffered a fire in her home this week and among the things lost was a drawer full of hair supplies. Hoboken hair salon Up and Out, located at 341 Bloomfield Street, quickly responded and offered to donate hair tools. The salon also extended an invitation for free salon services to help brighten this tough time.
City of Hoboken Issues Notice of Additional Direct Energy Billing Discrepancy
The City of Hoboken is notifying residents about an additional billing discrepancy by Direct Energy, the City's former clean energy provider, during December 2023. Per a Nixle alert, Hoboken recently announced similar overcharges in December 2024. Affected residents will receive a letter in the mail notifying them if they were impacted, along with a subsequent mailed refund check to correct the error. Hoboken no longer utilizes Direct Energy and is now under contract with IDT Energy Services this year.
The Heap Comes to Jersey City for New Exhibit

After walking the streets of Hoboken, The Heap has made its way to Jersey City as Art House Productions and Puppet Heap collaborate on The Heap at Art House: A Pop-Up Exhibit, which is running now through January 29th at Art House Gallery. Per NJ.com, this pop-up exhibit will be on display in the Art House Gallery and visible to the public from Marin Boulevard. The exhibit will also feature other Puppet Heap characters. Following the exhibit will be a spring program in the Art House Productions theater in March of 2025, featuring a performance by The Heap, short films created by Puppet Heap and a talk-back with artist Paul Andrejco.
Hoboken High School Basketball Coach Celebrates 150th Career Win
Hoboken High School head Basketball Coach Shaun Kolmer celebrated his 150th career win with a victory on January 7th. Per Patch Hoboken, the latest win happened in a game against Memorial High School. Under his leadership, the Redwings have been honored as the National Division Team of the Year three times and Shaun himself has been designated National Division Coach of the Year on two occasions. His teams have qualified for the state championships every season, winning at least one state playoff game in nine out of the 10 seasons.
Rent Control Will Apply to The Jordan in Hoboken, as Lawsuit Dismissed
Rent prices in the Hoboken area have skyrocketed within the past few years, with some neighborhoods charging tenants similar prices to those who live across the Hudson. Such affordability issues have led to a lawsuit surrounding rent control. The parties in this particular suit are The Jordan, a luxury apartment building located at 1200 Clinton Street in Hoboken; the City of Hoboken; and the City’s Rent Leveling + Stabilization Board. Jersey City Man Arrested in Hit + Run Accident on New Year’s Day
A 28-year-old Jersey City man has been charged with a New Year’s Day hit-and-run that occurred at the intersection of Communipaw and Marcy Avenues. Per the Jersey City Times, Matthew Small, 28, of Jersey City, was charged with knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle collision resulting in serious bodily injury, assault by auto, and endangering an injured victim. The victim, later identified as a 19-year-old Jersey City resident, suffered a serious upper body injury and was transported to Jersey City Medical Center for treatment. Matthew was arrested at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus and released pending his first court appearance, scheduled for January 30th.
