Trattoria Saporito in Hoboken: A Hidden Italian Gem on Washington

Written by:

Hoboken has its fair share of Italian restaurants, each unique in their own right — from the menu and to the flavors. These eateries are no strangers to fine dining and boast impressive menus and decor that wow all those who visit {when we can actually go, of course}. Trattoria Saporito, a landmark in the Mile Square, located at 328 Washington Street, is one such place.

Prior to the pandemic, Trattoria had just undergone an interior makeover and is looking even better than before — so when the doors open again, we can all visit and take it in. As for the regulars who frequently order from this hidden gem on the busiest street in town, they will say it is one of Hoboken’s best-kept secrets and they are certainly right. Read on to learn more about this Hoboken staple, open for delivery.

A Hidden Hoboken Gem for Two Decades

Trattoria Saporito Chef

Trattoria Saporito is certainly not new to the restaurant scene. Open since 1999, it has been a classic Italian restaurant in the Mile Square for the last 21 years. Gastone Alvarao, the original owner opened the restaurant with family recipes from Italy in mind. In March of 2019, Yahaira Ortiz, an old friend of Gastone came into the picture and became the new owner of Trattoria Saporito. As the owner and executive chef, she has worked towards modernizing the restaurant while keeping the authentic flavors and atmosphere of the original restaurant.

The Menu

The menu is what sets Trattoria Saporito apart from other Italian restaurants in the Mile Square. While most serve pizzas in addition to other Italian classics, Trattoria Saporito does not. “Our main focus is pasta — that is what our guests come for,” explained Ortiz. Boasting a menu filled with Italian classics including a mix of pasta, chicken, beef, veal, fish, and even vegan dishes, this cozy and romantic restaurant is at the top of the list for a more upscale Italian dining experience {again, when we’re allowed to physically dine-in again in the future}.

One plate that seems to be getting all of the attention is the stuffed rigatoni and meatballs — a twist on the classic dish. A lot of regulars also love the pork osso buco over risotto, a marriage of flavors, textures, and tenderness. We would be remiss not to mention the restaurant’s two most ordered menu items — the chicken parmigiana and penne vodka, which features rich flavors and are made to order. What sets this eatery apart from the rest, however, is its selection of vegan dishes, which include penne vodka, stuffed mushrooms, and a tomato + roasted risotto that is to die for. Trattoria even has handmade from scratch ravioli and potato gnocchi.

“A hidden gem of the menu is definitely the penne di carlo, made with pink vodka sauce, chicken, shiitake mushrooms, and mixed with penne pasta,” shared Ortiz.

The Atmosphere and Vibe

We’d be wrong to not give you a preview of what to expect inside when we can all physically visit again — Trattoria, after all, did recently receive an upgrade. The updates to the restaurant have really enhanced the atmosphere without taking away that sense of family and belongingness. Trattoria Saporito is the perfect date night spot or place to bring the parents — trust us on this one, you won’t be disappointed. The interior is cozy, welcoming, and authentic down to the core. And while this newly renovated restaurant revamped the interior, the menu is still just as it always was — authentic.
