With all of the news of chain businesses opening in the Mile Square, it’s always exciting to hear of a local mom-and-pop shop coming to town. The Little Local is Hoboken’s newest local coffee shop, located at 519 Adams Street {an area that’s definitely in need of this!}. We caught up with The Little Local’s owners and we’re spilling all the tea {pun intended} on what to expect on the menu and more. Keep reading to learn more about The Little Local, the newest coffee shop in Hoboken.

The Location

The storefront was once home to a dry cleaner,  so we can only assume that residents are pleased with what’s to come. Owners Peter and Sophie Malkmus are aiming to bring quality coffee to the West section of Hoboken and make local goods more accessible to residents of this part of town.

About the Owners

Husband and wife duo Peter and Sophie have a colorful past, in both their personal and work lives. In 2012, they met in Vienna, Austria where Sophie is from and where Peter worked and lived for five and a half years. Fast forward to 2016, the two moved to Hoboken and tied the knot in 2018. While The Little Local is their newest venture, it surely isn’t their only one — Peter is currently working on his MBA online at Rowan University and is the Store Director for a retail establishment, while Sophie is an account management coordinator for a production company in Manhattan — talk about hustlers!

The Menu

First things first: the coffee — coffee beans are sourced from Modcup, a Jersey City favorite, and owners Peter and Sophie have even created their very own blend {the Local Blend} which will also be sold as 1lb bags. Customers can also expect specialty iced coffees and hot teas that will change throughout each season. And yes, there will be non-dairy milks, such as almond and oat, available.

The Little Local will serve pastries from Choc O Pain — think chocolate croissants, almond croissants, and more {YUM}. With Choc O Pain a bit of a walk away from this neighborhood, this is yet another plus.

As for non-food items, there will be Little Local merchandise for sale and local art from Hoboken students to look at {which won’t be for sale, but is an awesome way to support the Hoboken schools}.

A Quick Q+A with the Owners

We sat down with Peter and Sophie to get an exclusive on the Little Local.

Hoboken Girl: What makes you unique from other coffee shops?

Peter and Sophie: The quality of our product. Outside of the personally crafted Local Blend, we will offer a seasonal coffee from ModCup that ensure our customers the freshest bean possible.

The trained staff. Our Manager Kristina and every barista gets a thorough training on how to pull the perfect espresso shot from Modcup in Jersey City. You will never have a better-tasting coffee from a  staff.

The store’s vibe is intimate and cozy, as if it were a home away from home.

We also try to involve as many local businesses as possible. We will buy books for customers to read from Little City Books. We will display plants from Soho Plant and Garden. Our cabinets and counter were made by Hoboken Custom Crafts. Art from local artists and we are looking into hosting a local musician from time to time. Just walking into The Little Local is a way to see what Hoboken and Jersey City have to offer in an intimate setting.

HG: What are you most excited about with this new venture?

P+S: We want people to leave our shop happy, energized, and inspired. It was our lifelong dream to open up a business and when we saw the space was available for rent so close to our home, we had to take this opportunity. Excited to see a dream become a reality. If you put your mind and heart into it, you can do anything!

HG: What are your favorite menu items?

Sophie:: I’m a specialty drink kind of gal — Iced Latte or Chai with Oat or Almond Milk.

Peter: Local Blend {no milk} or Double Shot of Espresso.

We can’t wait to meet you, The Little Local. Stay tuned for updates on the opening and an exclusive sneak peek of inside the shop before it opens, which rumors says, is VERY soon.
