Fall is a new beginning for a lot of us, and whether you’re ready for the change or not, the season is upon us. When a new {and totally gorgeous} sign popped up on our radar, we were more than excited to send out a GG-worthy spotted tip. Sophistikate {on 5th between Washington and Bloomfield} has been serving the Hoboken community since January of 2018. Specializing in cuts, colors, + blowouts, this salon caught our eye and lived up to every expectation we had.
Local Reputation
Owner and stylist, Kate Hawtin, opened her salon in late January of 2018 and brought quite a following with her. Prior to this, she had been working at another Hoboken salon, where she built up a great client base. When that closed, she decided to stay in the area and open her very own. With Kate is Kam and Christina {on the weekends}. All three ladies work well together beautifying the community one head at a time.
Interior
The salon is modern, sleek, and sophisticated {obviously}. The walls are lined in silvertone Versace wallpaper and the products used are just as rich. “We use our favorite products from different lines,” explains Kate. With Redken + Alphaparf Milano always in stock, clients are sure to get the highest quality color and hair care. When you’re here, you’re getting a Manhattan quality experience in the heart of Hoboken for an affordable price.

Our Experience

My experience at the salon was nothing less than fabulous. Kate listened carefully to the style I was going for since I already had something in mind, but also gave her expert opinion. Kate is so experienced and knows exactly how the color will process and how to give you that natural, sun-kissed look that has recently become so highly coveted. During my visit, local real estate agent, Lanie Von Ogden, a regular customer, was also in the salon and had nothing but positive things to say about Sophistikate. “There’s a lot of personality here. You really get to know your stylist and she gets to know you. I always get consistent results and never have to worry about not getting what I want. She truly listens to you and will always guide you in the right direction,” Von Ogden shared with me.
At the moment, balayage is still trending in the salon world and is a popular choice at Sophistikate. Balayage is basically hand-painted color that creates a natural, graduated, + sunkissed look. “It’s a low maintenance, lived in look. So many people want that.” Kate explained. That’s exactly what Danielle went for during her visit {pictured above}.
Hairdressers + Appointments
Kate, Kam, + Christina are all available for appointments. Kate and Kam are available during the week and Christina on weekends. The salon is offering $30 blowouts with Kam, who is licensed in NJ + Florida, from 2:00PM-5:00PM on weekdays. She does glosses, toners, and single-process colors and is quickly building her clientele. Busy during the week and can’t make it into the salon? Swing by on the weekend for an appointment with Christina. As for Kate, she does it all. From balayage to colors and cuts, Kate is always doing something different. She loves the variety and enjoys trying new techniques and styles.
Final Verdict
All in all, our experience with Kate and her staff was positive. We love the salon, staff, results, and atmosphere. We definitely recommend stopping by and giving Kate and her staff a try. You will enter with a vision and leave looking like a total bombshell. Sophistikate is open Tuesday to Friday from 11:00AM-8:00PM and Saturdays from 8:00AM-4:00PM.
