For those whose fall weekends involve riding the PATH, get ready to find alternative travel plans. Starting this Saturday, September 13th, train service between the Harrison and Journal Square stations will shut down for scheduled maintenance. This will be the start of several planned closures, happening on select weekends until November 2nd. Starting on September 13th, PATH service will be suspended between the Harrison and Journal Square stations “to accommodate the demolition of a Conrail freight rail bridge over PATH tracks,” according to a maintenance alert shared by the Port Authority. The suspension will affect both directions of the Newark–World Trade Center line.

The demolition will take place over the course of six weekends: September 13th to 14th, September 20th to 21st, October 4th to 5th, October 11th to 12th, October 25th to 26th, and November 1st to 2nd. On these dates, the line will be suspended from 11:59PM on Fridays to 5AM on Mondays.
“PATH service will operate between Newark Penn Station and Harrison, the JSQ-WTC line, and the JSQ-33 St via Hoboken line,” the alert says. “Weekday service will not be affected.”
To accommodate riders, PATH will also provide free shuttle buses between Harrison and Journal Square stations and between Newark-Penn Station and Journal Square during these weekends.
These planned closures are a part of the Port Authority’s $430 million PATH Forward program, which aims to rehabilitate the Hoboken, Grove Street, Newport, and Exchange Place stations over two years.
