Around 10:30AM on Tuesday, September 9th, Hoboken residents reported a water issue at the intersection of Newark Avenue and Garden Street. Water utility provider Veolia confirmed the issue in a tweet, saying that crews were performing emergency maintenance on a 12″ water main.

Many nearby roadways are closed, and residents in the area have reported low water pressure.
As of about 11:10AM, a sinkhole has occurred on Newark Avenue.
The City of Hoboken shared the following update via a Nixle alert around 11:30AM on Tuesday, September 9th.
Veolia is conducting repairs to a 12″ water main at the intersection of Newark and Garden Streets. Residents are advised to please avoid the area as the City’s water service provider works to restore full service.
Traffic Advisory
Residents should avoid the area of Newark and Garden Streets as repair work continues. Garden Street from Observer Highway to First Street and Newark Street from Bloomfield Street to Park Avenue is closed to all traffic.

As of 12:42PM, the City of Hoboken has advised that residents are under a boil water advisory. Per a Nixle alert shared by the City, all residents should boil water before consuming it.
“Veolia has notified the City of Hoboken that it is now under a Boil Water Advisory as required by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP).
The Boil Water Advisory is a necessary precaution, as a result of a 12” water main break at the intersection of Garden and Newark Streets, which resulted in water pressure dropping below the recommended threshold. The water main has since been isolated, and repairs are underway.
Veolia is working to restore full service as repairs continue. Once water is fully restored, residents are advised to boil water for consumption. (See below for more information).
The boil water advisory will remain in effect until further notice, as testing on water samples will be conducted as soon as possible. Veolia will notify Hoboken customers when testing indicates the boil water order can be lifted and the water supply is deemed satisfactory. ”
As of 7:30AM on Thursday, September 11th, the boil water advisory has been lifted. Per a Nixle alert from the City of Hoboken, “Repairs have been completed, and subsequent water quality testing shows the water quality meets all regulatory standards. THE BOIL WATER ADVISORY IS LIFTED and it is no longer necessary to boil your water before consumption.”
