For many, the start of the pandemic and quarantine earlier this year was a time to reflect on one’s true passions. Many people across the world lost their jobs or were furloughed due to the pandemic. Like so many others, Margarita {Margo} Gonzalez found herself jobless after Covid-19, and on the hunt to find her true passion. Fast forward a few months, and Margo recently opened her design boutique at the Stadium Plaza Shopping Center in Jersey City at 321 Route 440 on October 30th. Read on to learn how Margo used her time during quarantine to hone in on her design skills and finally open her own boutique.

Margo always loved fashion and had worked in the industry for years before creating her own designs. She was a district manager at Armani Exchange in Soho NYC for eight years, then she moved to TopShop, where she was able to train in the UK and study design on the side.

Margo always had a passion for designing but never pursued it, then Covid hit. “I did not want to come out of Covid the same person I was before. I wanted to do something for myself,” Margo explains. She started making masks, but didn’t love to sew so she shifted her efforts to designing T-Shirts. Virgil Abloh of Off-White was a huge inspiration for Margo, as he also started his early career designing T-shirts. Margo continued working and designing what would soon become her collection for the shop.

She would use YouTube to learn skills such as how to sew, or how to create a business entity and start a website. Google and YouTube became her best friend, and before she knew it, she launched Margo Designs Boutique as a “shop within a shop” inside Sayallures Boutique in Jersey City on October 30th, 2020. She later launched her kid’s collection on November 7th.

The majority of the product in the shop is designed or repurposed by Margo. The Imperfection Collection, which is currently displayed in the shop, features one-of-a-kind designs that are tie-dyed, bleached, cut, and sewn with mismatched army sleeves, distressed, or repurposed to create items that are special and unique.

“It is all individual so you will never catch someone with the same item,” Margo told Hoboken Girl s. Other items that Margo sells include oversized graphic sweatshirts, sweatpants, repurposed vintage pieces, and a few basic items that Margo buys from vendors to mix in with her collection.

Prices start at $50 and go up to $250 for more special pieces. The brand was made to represent strength and love. “I just want everyone to feel happy in the product and be comfortable, but still look fashionable,” she says.

Several pieces in the collection are also designed for the Black Lives Matter movement. “People are always saying Black Lives Matter and wanting to support, so I wanted to offer a product to represent our people,” Margo explains.

Top sellers in the boutique are the tie-dyed and stenciled sweatsuits, and the graphic sweatshirts. The sweatshirts are $95, and the pants are $70 and are some of Margo’s best selling pieces.
