A Sneak Peek of Lokal: Jersey City’s Newest Waterfront Restaurant

Written by:

When one door closes, another one opens. A new restaurant, Lokal, has taken the place of Taphaus in Jersey City, featuring the same stunning waterfront views of the New York City skyline. Customers will not be disappointed with the change-up. Lokal will offer modern American cuisine, taking a truly local approach to each dish on their menu by sourcing as many ingredients from the Garden State as they can. Jersey City has a very diverse community, but we are all the new locals. The team at Lokal recognizes this changing spirit of the city and wanted to create a place that reflects the culture. Keep reading to discover a sneak peek about Lokal, Jersey City’s newest waterfront restaurant.

The Background

Owner, Mona Panjwani, along with her concept creator, Hemant Phul, understands the abundance that Jersey City has to offer with its stunning waterfront views, vibrant restaurant scene, and compelling history, and wanted to create a place that reflected this. Panjwani did not start out in the restaurant business though. She launched an events production company in 2014 and came across the idea to create Lokal more recently while seeking a venue for her own company. The former Taphaus location was a perfect fit for Panjwani. Being a full-service restaurant and bar and offering event and private dining spaces, Lokal combines all of Panjwani’s skills, passions, experiences and goals into one, stunning space.

The Vibe

lokal skyline view

Lokal’s expansive space features a large bar area, and an outdoor patio, and floor to ceiling windows looking out onto the Hudson River and downtown New York City skyline. It has an upscale feel, dim lighting {once the sun goes down}, and an angel wing selfie wall for creating premium content, giving us major Taylor Swift vibes.

Lokal is perfect for a romantic date, girls night, brunch, or happy hour with friends any night of the week. The restaurant will also have a special area for private events, perfect for birthdays, engagement parties, work events, and more.

The Menu + Drinks

Lokal’s food consists of Modern American cuisine and, according to the team, it will be the hub of the global culture of Jersey City. The menu will feature a variety of mouth-watering dishes including crispy oysters, truffle mac and cheese, lamb steaks, flatbreads, and more, all made with the Garden State’s finest ingredients, and created by executive chef, Walter Donadio. Donadio has quality experience working in several New York kitchens, and Jersey residents will love how he transforms these locally sourced items into worldwide flavors.

Lokal also offers a comprehensive wine program and craft cocktails by mixologist, Tess Sawyer. The cocktail list combines classic favorites such as a Negroni or Aperol Spritz, and signature drinks such as the Elliot Stubb, made with Yuzu juice, aquafaba, blueberry honey syrup, and choice of bourbon or tequila for a sweet and citrusy delight.

Alexis moved to Hoboken after she graduated college in 2015 and fell in love with the area right away. She currently lives in Jersey City with her boyfriend, Ewan, and works in New York City as a fashion buyer by day and an aspiring entrepreneur by night. In her spare time, when she is not exploring the new, trendy spots around town, you will find her working out at one of her favorite local classes, singing along to the soundtrack of Wicked, or creating macrame wall art and home decor that she sells on Etsy.
