The Space

Living Room is situated next door to Gia Gelato and Villiage Wines, making for a fun addition to the neighborhood. The storefront itself previously housed Casa Mona Flowers + Home boutique, which now operates online. “Casa Mona had been my refuge, a welcoming neighborhood retreat that literally brought me to life in special and difficult moments. I bumped my big pregnant belly into their towering flowers and stopped there on my first stroll out in the wild with my newborn. In 2020, in the span of 1 month and on the brink of the pandemic Casa Mona adorned my daughter’s 1st birthday and my mother’s funeral with their designs…filling us with subtle joy and memory the way that only their flowers can – I couldn’t imagine entrusting that task to anyone else,” Francesca wrote on Instagram.

She continued in a heartfelt message, “When Antonio let me know they’d be closing their doors to explore their next adventure, I couldn’t let our #jerseycity village community lose this space and quickly thought about how to preserve its essence. (literally, I walked back onto the shop 20 minutes later and said to Antonio “I want your space”…then we cried). And that’s how Living Room was born…with their blessing, we hope we’re carrying with us some of the special spirit of Casa Mona that Antonio and Carlos created.”

The shop itself is beautifully decorated with vibrant murals, colorful products, and overall good vibes. Shamika Lynch of Maximizing Tiny, who specializes in interior design for small (tiny) places, was tapped to help Francesca make the most of the space. Other local businesses helped her prep for the opening and supported her journey.

She called out a few on Instagram saying, “We could not be more grateful to a few small businesses and incredible humans who have done the most for us. Shamika walked right into the space and gave me the courage (and design justification) to rearrange. Thanks to Shamika our tiny space still has stroller parking. Asha (@thepinkpainther) brought E N E R G Y into our space with a transformative mural that reflects our values and vibe. Angel the Handyman – who doesn’t need a website because he’s so busy, but made time to help us make small adjustments to reimagine the space for us. Shayla (@tiaplanta) is a powerhouse who took time out of fighting for her rightful place in #jerseycity to find the right life 🪴 for our space,” and went on to thank more neighboring small businesses.
