Signage Up for Joe + The Juice in Downtown Hoboken

Another buzzy chain could be making its way to Hoboken. On Monday, March 2nd, the Hoboken Historic Preservation Commission reviewed an application for a new Joe + The Juice location. The juice and smoothie chain is seeking to take over the former Cheap Maggie’s outpost at 216 Washington Street. Though there are over 400 Joe + The Juice locations worldwide, this would mark its first New Jersey storefront. Keep reading for what we know about the Joe + The Juice location potentially coming to Hoboken.

What We Know

As of March 18th, 2026, a construction wrap has appeared on the storefront, with Joe + The Juice signs and branding. An opening date is still not known.

On Monday, March 2nd, the Hoboken Historic Preservation Commission reviewed, among several others, an application for a Joe + The Juice location in Hoboken. This is part of the city’s review process for properties located within historic districts.

Per the application materials, Joe + The Juice is seeking to take over 216 Washington Street, the former site of Cheap Maggie’s, which closed in 2023. Because 216 Washington Street sits along Hoboken’s main commercial corridor, any exterior changes to the storefront would require commission approval before moving forward.

The commission approved the plans. The business may still need to secure additional permits or approvals from the City of Hoboken before officially opening.

Joe + The Juice was founded in Copenhagen in 2002, and over the years, has accrued a cult following for its juices, smoothies, coffees, and sandwiches (including the viral tuna-cado). While the brand has since expanded to over 400 locations across the world, a Hoboken location would mark its first venture into New Jersey. The Hoboken Girl has reached out to the Joe + The Juice team to learn more about its Hoboken plans, and in particular, when it is anticipated to open.

Other Items of Note

Included also in the Historic Preservation Commission agenda from the March 2nd meeting were plans for a new ice cream shop, Oddfellows Ice Cream Shop. A NYC-based ice cream shop known for its over-the-top flavors (including the viral Breast Milk moment from 2025) is planning to take over the space at 53 First Street. A source close to the project confirmed with HG that Oddfellows received approval from the Historic Preservation Commission.

This comes at a time when empty Hoboken storefronts remain an ongoing conversation, and while residents continue to take note of an influx of chains moving into Hoboken. At the beginning of 2026, the HG team walked up and down Washington Street and counted 24 empty storefronts. Local real estate experts tell HG, as older Hoboken business owners sell their businesses and shift to retirement, more national brands have been expressing interest in those open retail spaces.

Other notable businesses on the way to Hoboken include Lenwich, Pura Vida, and New Balance. Still, a lot of locally-owned spots are in the works, too — and we have a list of them here. That includes the new boutique pharmacy, Hoboken Apothecary, at 210 Washington Street.
