Bob Dylan is from Minnesota; Timothée Chalamet is from New York City; but Timothée Chalamet portraying Bob Dylan is distinctly and assuredly from New Jersey. Nearly all of the filming for A Complete Unknown, the upcoming Bob Dylan biopic in which Timothée stars, occurred in various Garden State locations. Hoboken + Jersey City was a hub for the project this spring, with the crew transforming local restaurants, shops, bars, and public spaces into a 1960s dreamscape. Timothée Chalamet might hold the top billing, but the movie’s official teaser (released today) solidifies Hudson County as a main character. There are Hoboken + Jersey City cameos abound: from faux signage on Jersey Avenue to Moran’s disguised as “McAnn’s,” a 1960s New York bar and restaurant. As an au revoir to The Hoboken Girl‘s coverage of this topic, we’ve taken to task. Keep reading to see the Hoboken + Jersey City locations featured in the A Complete Unknown trailer.
How Many Can You Spot?
There’s a lot to unpack about the official teaser trailer — Timothée covering “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall,” the fiddler cap he wears more than once — but through all the illuminations and easter eggs, we recognized four familiar Hoboken + Jersey City locations. The story is set primarily in New York City, which would be a wonderful opportunity to boast Hudson County supremacy, but instead, we’ll focus on the matter at hand.
Church Square Park | 400 Garden Street, Hoboken
The official teaser is 1:52 minutes long, but it takes approximately three seconds before Hoboken makes an appearance. The opening scene shows Timothée-as-Bob-Dylan ambling through the street adjacent to Church Square Park. This scene was likely shot on or around April 12th, when the Garden Street park was famously closed off for filming.

Moran’s Pub | 501 Garden Street

Moran’s has been serving the community since 1989, but for A Complete Unknown, this neighborhood pub traveled 20 years before its inception to portray a 1960s NYC bar called “McAnn’s.” 10 seconds in, the teaser shows Timothée/Bob approaching McAnn’s in his signature monochromatic suit and sunglasses (at night, naturally). On the day of this shot, April 12th, locals came out in droves to catch a glimpse of the star.
Jersey Avenue | Jersey City

Jersey Avenue is home to many of our favorite local businesses — Kitchen Step, Würstbar, Subia’s Vegan Cafe — but in mid-April, the strip went undercover to appear as vintage storefronts including an old-school bodega, cafe, liquor store, art shop, etc. Locals can spot the reimagined main street one minute into the teaser, as Timmy turns a corner past “Cafe Wha?”
Corner of 8th + Washington | Hoboken
At minute 1:14, buzzing fans wait in a queue outside of Gerde’s Folk City, a famed music venue in Greenwich Village, Manhattan. The club closed in 1987, so the crew dressed up a property on 8th + Washington Street in Hoboken to play the part, per TapInto.
The Background
This spring, blooming flowers and rising temps came secondary in local interest to the numerous celeb sightings around Hoboken + Jersey City. Chief among these was Timothée Chalamet, who was first seen filming at the Miss America Diner in Jersey City on March 25th + 26th.
For the next three months that followed, Timothée Chalamet was everywhere: White Mana Diner, Moran’s, Little City Books, Snapdragon. It was hard for HG to beat the fan account allegations, as the Dune II star was spotted nearly every week. At one point, Timothée was seen signing an autograph for a young fan.
The last official sighting was June 10th, when Timothée and co. were seen filming at Little City Books on 1st + Bloomfield Street.
About the Movie
A Complete Unknown was originally slated to begin filming last year, but production was halted due to the Screen Actors Guild strike, according to NJ.com. Per Deadline, the movie is set in “the influential New York music scene of the early ’60s” and follows “19-year-old Minnesota musician Bob Dylan’s meteoric rise as a folk singer to concert halls and the top of the charts.” The title refers to Bob Dylan’s hit “Like a Rolling Stone,” in which he sings: “How does it feel, how does it feel/To be without a home, like a complete unknown, like a rolling stone?”
