Exploring the great outdoors with kids is not only a breath of fresh air for families but also a chance to create lasting memories. Fortunately, there are some great family-friendly hiking options just a stone’s throw away here in Northern New Jersey. These trails provide an opportunity for children to connect with nature. Read on to plan a hiking outing under an hour away from Hudson County. 

Palisades Interstate Park | Alpine

Located along the Hudson River, Palisades Interstate Park has multiple trails for all levels. There are stunning views of the river.  Perhaps most importantly, it has a gift shop nearby with bathrooms. You can also choose to walk along the flat cliff near the parking lot and look at the view if you have children not yet ready to tackle the steeper trails that go up and down the cliffside. Palisades Interstate Park is located about a 40-minute drive from Jersey City. The closest public transit stops are River Road 120’s Of Maple Avenue stop via the 158 bus.

Eagle Rock Reservation | Eagle Rock Avenue + Prospect Avenue, West Orange

Eagle Rock Reservation is a 400-acre park located in Essex County along the Watchung Mountains ridge, providing visitors with panoramic views of the New York City skyline and the surrounding areas. It’s a stone’s throw away from downtown Montclair, where you can grab a well-earned meal or snack post-hike. Eagle Rock has a large variety of trail difficulties. Eagle Rock Reservation is located about a 35-minute drive from Jersey City. The closest public transit stops are Eagle Rock Avenue At Conforti Avenue stop via the 71 bus and the NJ Transit Walnut Street Station.

South Mountain Reservation | Cherry Lane, West Orange

Just a short drive from Hudson County, South Mountain Reservation in Essex County features the Hemlock Falls Trail. This trail takes you through wooded areas and past waterfalls. The reservation’s recreation complex also offers swan paddle boats, an ice rink, and mini golf. The Turtle Back Zoo is also on the facility. South Mountain Reservation is located about a 30-minute drive from Jersey City. The closest public transit stops are Northfield Avenue and Warwick Lane stop via the 73 bus and the NJ Transit Millburn Station.

Meadowlands Environment Center Trail | 2 De Korte Park Plaza, Lyndhurst

The Meadowlands Environment Center in Lyndhurst offers various trails that wind through the unique ecosystems of the Meadowlands. These trails provide opportunities for birdwatching and there is an annual birdwatching festival. The William D. McDowell Observatory is across the street and is open to the public on Wednesdays. The viewings are recommended for children aged 10 and up. Meadowlands Environment Center Trail is located about a 30-minute drive from Jersey City. The closest public transit stop is the NJ Transit Kingsland Station in Lyndhurst.

Watchung Reservation | Historic Trail, Mountainside

Located not far from Hudson County, Watchung Reservation offers a variety of hiking trails in a wooded and scenic setting. The reservation covers over 2,000 acres and features the History Trail. This guided trail has signs along the hike that describe the Watchung Reservation’s history or its uses of the land before it was incorporated into the park. The Trailside Nature and Science Center has multiple exhibits, a gift shop, and a theater. Watchung Reservation is located about a 30-minute drive from Jersey City. The closest public transit stop is the NJ Transit Summit Station.
