Typically when someone says they want to see an art show, it involves putting together an artsy outfit and visiting a gallery or theatre to take in someone’s masterpiece. Today, the masterpiece could come to you. On Wednesday, September 18th, an interesting-looking man carrying a cast of characters will make his way down Washington Street, only he isn’t a man, he’s a puppet. “The Heap” is returning to Hoboken for one afternoon only. On its back is a collection of stories, some alive, with connections to the Mile Square City. Here’s what we know about the puppet returning to Hoboken and where to catch the interactive show on September 18th, 2024.

About Puppet Heap

Puppet Heap is a New Jersey-based entertainment company that has strong connections to Hudson County. In the early 1990s, Paul Andrejco, an artist, designer, filmmaker, speaker, and professor, started with a heap of puppets in his Hoboken apartment. Paul began his career with the famous Jim Henson Company, known for creating Kermit the Frog along with many of his friends in the Muppets. Since its conception in Hoboken, Puppet Heap has created many original characters and developed projects for clients around the world. Some of their notable projects include working for Disney, Sesame Workshop, and Nickelodeon.

The Interactive Show

The show kicks off at 2:30PM on September 18th at The Hoboken Historical Museum at 1301 Hudson Street. The Heap will emerge from the museum and begin to make his way to Church Square Park at 400 Garden Street where he will perform “The Last Sausage featuring ‘Little Frankie,’” at 3PM. After his performance, The Heap will continue marching forward to the Monroe Center for the Arts on 7th and Jackson Street, and at 5PM he will perform “The Last Sausage” once more before retiring. The rain date for this performance is scheduled for September 25th. To see the The Heap in action before he treks through Hoboken, visit its website.

“We hope visitors come away with memorable stories and a newfound appreciation for puppetry. In a world where people are often glued to their phones, we’re bridging the gap between digital and real-world experiences,” Cindy Alves from Puppet Heap told The Hoboken Girl.

This isn’t The Heap’s first visit to Hoboken. Last year, Puppet Heap had an exhibit at The Hoboken Historical Museum. It started with The Heap making his journey from the Monroe Center for the Arts with the weight of dozens of stories on his back, mostly drawing inspiration from Hoboken itself.

“The more I live in this town–the changes I observe, the more I learn about its history–the more ghosts I see everywhere I look,” Paul told The Hoboken Historical Museum in 2023. “As if all the years, all the people, the triumphs and tragedies all exist simultaneously and the community carries it all as it pushes ahead into the future.”
