Shortly after the completion of the Grand Street Complete Streets project, Hoboken residents have reported two accidents including a cyclist collision. The bike lane opened on November 19th in Hoboken and is set to be unveiled with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on November 24th. The project is part of Hoboken’s Vision Zero Initiative which aims to eliminate all traffic related deaths and injuries by 2030. Construction for the project began the week of October 27th, and has concluded as of the 19th. Read on for what we know so far about the accidents + their connection to the new bike lane.
So far, the City has only confirmed the accident involving two cyclists. A representative for the City confirmed the incident telling The Hoboken Girl the following:
“According to the Hoboken Police Department, two cyclists operating e-bikes were involved in a collision last night at approximately 8:45 pm on Grand Street. The crash occurred when one cyclist traveled eastbound from the street between parked vehicles, in the crosswalk, crossing perpendicularly across the designated bike lane, and failed to see an oncoming cyclist who was traveling southbound in the one-way protected bike lane. The two riders subsequently collided on Grand Street between Fifth and Sixth Streets.
Hoboken Police and Hoboken EMS responded to the scene. One cyclist refused medical treatment on the scene and the other was transported to a nearby hospital for a head injury and later discharged.”
In the same evening, however, according to local residents, there was also an alleged car crash. Eye witnesses shared on social media that two cars had side swiped each other on Grand Street. It is unknown if this is related to the new bike lanes, and the City of Hoboken has only confirmed the e-bike crash.
Instagram user @car100780 shared an Instagram post detailing the crash, which was then reposted by Councilman Russo, screenshotted below:

HG reached out to both mayoral runoff candidates Dr. Mike Russo and Emily Jabbour, who are currently council members in Hoboken. City Councilman Dr. Mike Russo shared the following statement regarding the accident via X:
Another Day, Another E-Bike Incident in Hoboken
Tonight, right outside Church Towers, two e-bike delivery drivers collided with each other, causing multiple injuries. I wish them both a speedy recovery. Unfortunately, this was preventable. pic.twitter.com/PFHVvSWG2A
