The City of Hoboken announced on October 15th that it will introduce a new protected bike lane on Grand Street. The statement via Nixle and press release included the new bike lane in the launch of the Grand Street Complete Streets Pilot. The redesign plan for the street is part of the City’s Vision Zero Initiative, which aims to eliminate all traffic-related deaths and injuries by 2030. The construction of the bike lane will take place between Third Street and Eight Street. Read on for more information about the program, and what residents can expect in the coming weeks in Hoboken.
Announcement Details
The announcement was published via Nixle on Wednesday, October 15th at 5:23PM, stating that the pilot aims to “improve mobility and reduce traffic disruptions”. The project includes 23 high-visibility crosswalks, 11 curb extensions designed to improve intersection visibility, and upgraded ADA-compliant ramps. The protected bike lane will be built on the East side of the street, connecting with existing nearby bike routes. The new lane accommodates Hoboken’s street cleaning using compact multi-hog sweepers, and residents parked on the East side of the street will no longer need to move their cars for street cleaning.

The program will include on-street parking spaces, 36 new bicycle parking spaces, expanded flexible curbside zones for deliveries and ride share pick-up/drop-off. The plan also highlights infrastructure updates, including two new manufactured treatment devices (MTDs) for stormwater management and water quality.
What This Means for Residents
The construction for the redesign will begin the week of October 27th, with no exact day yet mentioned. The plan is set to launch “on or about November 3rd.” Work will include milling, paving, stripping, delineator installations and bicycle parking installations.
The plan is the newest development in the City’s Vision Zero Initiative and Complete Streets Design and Implementation Plan, Mayor Ravi Bhalla issued the following statement, “This initiative builds on Hoboken’s progress toward safer and more sustainable streets,” continuing, “The Grand Street Complete Streets Pilot reflects our commitment to Vision Zero by investing in smarter street design, modern infrastructure, and innovative parking and mobility solutions that benefit everyone who lives, works, or travels in Hoboken.”

Similar projects, including Sinatra Drive Complete Streets and 3rd + 13th Complete Streets have been discussed at City Council meetings held on September 17th and October 8th, however, the redesign project taking place on Grand Street has not been included on the agenda for recent City Council meetings.
Project Updates
Per a Nixle alert sent November 18th, the City will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony on November 24th celebrating the completion of the Grand Street Complete Streets project including the new bike lane. The ceremony will take place at 3PM at the intersection of Sixth and Grand Streets.
