If you’ve ever been to Charritos in Hoboken or Weehawken, then you know the Mexican goodness that takes place at these delicious spots on the reg. So, when signage indicating closure went up last week at the 518 Washington Street location in Hoboken, locals took note. Cue the collective exhale, taco lovers — Charritos Hoboken is NOT closing, but instead rebranding into Charritos Taqueria. This makeover means a smaller menu that focuses mainly on tacos + margaritas. Charritos Taqueria is officially reopened for business, with a new look but the same flavors we all know and love. Read on for what we know about Charritos’ rebranding and what to expect from this Hoboken staple.

Taqueria Talk

It was a scary few days in Hoboken when signs were hung outside of Charritos’ 518 Washington Street location reading “is closed.” Lucky for us, Charritos isn’t going anywhere — it’s just rebranding into Charritos Taqueria.

The addition of the surname “Taqueria,” means that Charritos is saying goodbye to some of its classic Mexican menu offerings (enchiladas and other entrees) and committing itself to tacos almost exclusively. While the new menu is smaller in size, it’s jam-packed with taco options, including chicken, steak, pork, veggie, and birria (a personal fave) to name a few. Margaritas are a key focus of this rebrand, too, with frozen + on-the-rocks pitchers to indulge in.

Many fan-favorite appetizers have made it through the rebrand unscathed — including, of course, the guacamole, which real ones know is no joke. Queso Fundido, Elotes, and Salsas con Totopos also secured a spot on the new menu. Take a peek at the new menu here.

As for the why behind the rebrand, Charritos took to Instagram to share that it’s here to “shake up the traditional Hoboken Mexican dining experience with a fresh twist” on the flavors of the OG Charritos. Charritos Taqueria will still deliver the same tastiness as it once did, it’s just now married to the taco game. And, honestly, we’re thrilled for the happy couple.

Charritos Taqueria is officially reopened for business, operating Sunday – Wednesday from 11:30AM – 9:30PM, Thursday from 11:30AM – 10PM, and Friday + Saturday from 11:30AM – 10:30PM. We can’t wait to stop by + and dig into the new dishes.

If you’re mourning the loss of the Charritos that was, no fear — The Weehawken location remains a full-scale restaurant rather than a taqueria, and as of now, will maintain the traditional Charritos menu. Take a peek into our archives to see why we’ve loved this spot for years here.

Charrito’s Taqueria isn’t the only local taqueria making headlines this week. Saturday, February 11th, Jersey City’s Taqueria was tragically impacted by a reckless driving incident. The JC taco spot was temporarily closed but has since announced its reopening. We are sending good thoughts to everyone involved.
