Jersey City is in for even more food news. HDSID recently announced on Instagram that a new barbecue restaurant called Boots & Bones is expected to take over The Bistro at Grove Square in downtown Jersey City. Located at 116 Newark Avenue, the up-and-coming eatery is part of the revamp of the complex of restaurants surrounding the Grove Street PATH train. Boots & Bones joins the previously announced Basile’s Pizza that will be opening its second location. Read on for more details.

Timeline of the Takeover
Construction began earlier this year on the Grove Square complex where Basile’s Pizza of Hoboken is set to open a second location. Passersby will notice the inside of the former popular bar, Grove Corner Bar (formerly called The Coffee Shop and The Third Base Sports Bar), being completely remodeled for the pizza hotspot to open in the near future. There’s even a notice on the window which specifies the pizzeria takeover. Next to that, Grove Station Bar remains open, and on the other side, the space next door – formerly The Bistro – has completely closed and is empty inside.

Jersey Digs recently reported that a company called 116 Newark Ave. Rest. Inc. applied to transfer a liquor license to the property and that a notice to Jersey City’s Alcoholic Beverage Control board revealed the property’s name “Boots & Bones.”

Boots & Bones launched its social media account mid-June once news broke of the opening. The first post on the new Instagram reads, “The word is out! Thanks @jerseydigs for our 1st piece of press! …Look for more about @bootsandbonesbbq and #followthesmoke.”
Behind The Scenes
The barbecue joint, which is owned by the same company that operates nearby restaurants The Ashford and Six26 Lounge, also launched its website around the same time. Jeff Lam, who helped work on The Ashford, will also be part of the team helping with the design.
B&B’s website states that the logo is “A Taste of the South” and the chef is Kenny Callaghan. According to Kenny’s profile, he is a “pioneer of urban barbecue, ushering old school techniques and rich flavors into New York City for more than 10 years.” He previously worked at NYC’s Union Square Café, Jazz Standard, which has since closed down, and opened Blue Smoke, an American South restaurant in Battery Park, in 2001 before leaving in 2013 to “pursue an array of new culinary opportunities.”

By the looks of it, there’s still quite a long time to go before Boots & Bones opens. Based on the website, the expected date of opening is fall 2022.
In the meantime, Grove Street is still popping! Grove Station has daily food and drink specials, including happy hour until 9PM, and karaoke Thursday to Saturday. The Historic Downtown Jersey City Farmer’s Market is from 4PM to 8PM Mondays and Thursdays. And of course, there are plenty of other must-try restaurants near Grove Street, such as Porta, Skinner’s Loft, Frankie, and Latham House.
