Baja — this is the Spanish word for the classic fish taco that originated in Baja California, Mexico, and the preparation is referred to in the U.S. as “Baja-style.” Lucky for Mile Square locals, we’ve got our own Baja-style restaurant right here — Baja Mexican Cuisine. This restaurant, located at 104 14th Street, has been the charbroil Tex-Mex destination for locals since 1987. The family-owned + operated restaurant is the place to go for delicious Mexican grill combinations, top-notch margaritas, classic sangria, and one of the largest collections of 100% blue agave tequilas in the state. Read on to learn about the experience and food options at Baja Mexican Cuisine.

The Experience

When you set foot at Baja Mexican Cuisine, you will find the exterior of the restaurant is painted in traditional Mexican colors that have been used to bring warmth and life to their native pueblos. The bright yellow, turquoise, and red paint brings a vibrancy to 14th Street. During the warm seasons + when things are fully open again, customers have the option of sitting outside in their front patio area. A fun neon sign hangs in the window that reads “Baja” alongside cacti, decorative musicians, and 3D lizards.

Back inside, the interior is dimly lit, perfect for a romantic evening but bright enough to admire the hand-painted murals of Mexican art. The vibrant colors continue throughout the inside and provide the perfect backdrop for the traditional Mexican sculptures and cultural masks. The Mexican folk art known as papel picado, which translates to pecked paper, hangs from the ceiling, adding to the colorful and festive vibe.

The Menu

Some of Baja’s best-sellers are chile con queso with chips, the fajita salad, the Burrito Texano, fresh guacamole with chips, and the grilled skirt steak quesadilla. Other delicious options include the ceviche, caldo de camarones, the caldo xo-chil, and a whopping 11 options of quesadillas.

Vegetarians also have no shortage of options with at least 10 choices of dishes on the menu, including enchiladas de espinaca, chimichangas de vegetales, fajitas, tacos, and burritos. But don’t stop there — the seafood, chicken, and beef options are mouth-watering, endless, and great to enjoy at home when you order.

Finally, for the inevitable dessert order, there are six delectable options, but we recommend getting the tres leches, sopapillas, which is a kind of fried pastry, or the choco banana.
