Hoboken received the news that Artichoke Pizza was expanding to the Mile Square back in 2017, and a Jersey City location was to follow. Hoboken’s Artichoke Pizza opened in 2019, and Artichoke Basille’s was excited to announce in March 2021 that it was going to be opening a new storefront at 246 Bay Street in Jersey City. Now, locals can stop in for a slice as the restaurant had its soft opening this week.

The New Location

Artichoke Basille’s is located in what was once two separate spaces, CFH Home Decor + Accessories and a Chiropractor’s office, directly across the street from Barcade. This property is in the heart of a highly trafficked area just off the Newark Avenue Pedestrian Plaza only a few short steps away from the Grove Street PATH train station.

This is the second franchise run by co-owners Prem and Leela Shanghvi, who have big plans for the future. Back in March 2020, Prem shared, “Since we signed the deal with Artichoke, we wanted Hoboken to be the first of our five locations. The next stop is Jersey City. We hope to open in New Brunswick, Princeton, and Newark in the near future.”

A History With Strong Family Roots

Artichoke Basille’s was first put on the map back in 2008 when Founders Francis Garcia and Sal Basille, cousins and fourth-generation restaurateurs, opened their doors in New York City’s East Village. Over a dozen years later, diners can now find locations all throughout New York (Bayridge, Bushwick, Chelsea, Financial District, Greenwich Village, John F. Kennedy Airport, LaGuardia Airport, Park Slope + Time Square), California (Berkeley + Oakland), Connecticut (Hartford), Arizona (Tempe), and of course Hoboken, New Jersey conveniently located on 96 Hudson Street just blocks away from the PATH train station, Pier A Park, and a large portion of the Mile Square’s Downtown nightlife.

Francis and Sal have even released a cookbook, “Staten Italy: Nothin’ but the Best Italian-American Classics from Our Block to Yours,” so fans could try their beloved recipes from the convenience of one’s own kitchens.

The Menu

According to Prem and Leela, same as the Hoboken location, this menu will star Artichoke’s authentic New York slices and larger-than-life whole pies in eight varieties, including signature styles like the namesake Artichoke Pie that’s made with artichoke hearts, spinach, cream sauce, mozzarella, and pecorino romano cheese.

Guests can also enjoy the innovative Crab Pie made with crab sauce and fresh mozzarella with surimi stuffing or the Staten Island Pie filled with meatballs, cooked tomato sauce, red onions, and ricotta cheese, in addition to classics including Margherita, Pepperoni, Vodka, Meatball, and Meat Lovers. In addition to pizza, this location will also serve meatball platters, garlic knots, and family-sized portions of breadsticks.
