The intersection of 3rd and Washington Streets may be one of the oldest in the city, but a new era is about to begin. After a multi-year renovation, the building at 235-237 Washington Street, known as the Hoboken House, has reopened. The ground-floor tenant of the multi-use building is clothing retailer Abercrombie & Fitch, which will celebrate its grand opening on Friday, June 27th, according to the property’s landlord. Read on for more about this storied corner in Hoboken and all of the details about Abercrombie & Fitch taking over the former Arthur’s space in the building.
About the Space
The building located at 235-237 Washington Street was the longtime location of the popular restaurant Arthur’s Steak. The restaurant opened in the 1980s and became a favorite go-to for straightforward, classic meals.
The restaurant announced its closure in February 2022, framing the change as temporary. The restaurant’s owners since 2011, David + Wandy Jacey, shared the following statement on Instagram shortly before the closure:
“Dear friends and loyal customers. It’s with a heavy heart that we announce that Arthur’s will be closing for renovations at the end of January. Our last day of business will be Sunday January 30. Please come visit us one more time and enjoy an Arthur’s steak, the famous griddled potatoes, garlic bread, french onion soup, and our famous burger before we close.”

The restaurant’s last day of service was February 6th, 2022. While residents had hoped that the restaurant would re-open, news of an incoming location of fashion retailer Abercrombie & Fitch was the end of the line.
New Beginnings
The building was renovated and renamed Hoboken House as it was marketed to new tenants. “Hoboken House is a state-of-the-art 5-story, 18-unit residential development on Hoboken’s busy Washington Street with 4,870 square feet of ground floor retail with 3 sides,” per the marketing materials.
The name “Hoboken House” is a return to the past for the building: a restaurant named Hoboken House operated at 237 Washington Street for many years.

The Hoboken Girl first reported on Abercrombie’s plans to open in Hoboken in summer 2024 and chatted with Bobby Antonicelli Jr., the broker who helped make the deal. “The developer had a vision for the retail space at the old Arthur’s, and wanted something that would be great and new for Hoboken and the surrounding businesses of Washington Street,” Bobby shared with HG at the time. Abercrombie & Fitch is a clothing retailer specializing in casual clothes for men, women and children. The Hoboken location will have men’s and women’s clothing, as well as accessories available.

Signage went up in the space in March 2025 while crews finish working on the space. According to the property owner, the store will host its opening this Friday, June 27th.
