Here in Hoboken + Jersey City, we’re not exactly hard-pressed for delicious burger options — within just a few short miles, our neighborhood packs a mighty punch of smashed, steakhouse, and even fully vegan options. Even so, there’s a new burger joint daring to enter the ring, and it comes to us from across the Hudson. 7th Street Burger has built quite a reputation for itself in New York City, with many internet goers dubbing it the best burger NYC has to offer (the $6.50 price point might aid that effort). Now, this popular burger joint has ventured to Hoboken, taking over the former Happy Vegans space at 410 Washington Street (the irony there is not lost on us). Read on for what we know about 7th Street Burger’s arrival in Hoboken.

What We Know

In the Fall of 2022, nearly two years after its opening, Happy Vegans closed the doors of its 410 Washington Street location in Hoboken. The plant-based eatery served Turkish eats like veggie Çiğ Köfte — a Turkish delicacy — tofu, and turmeric rice, and the Hoboken outpost was its second New Jersey location, the first being in Clifton, which remains open.

Though Happy Vegans closed, its signage remained at the Washington Street storefront for quite some time, leaving locals to wonder what would fill its place. In an unexpected series of events, it turns out one of New York City’s most popular burger chains has taken over the building — and while 7th Street Burger is a pretty far cry from the vegan eatery that was, the spot was slated to open its doors on July 2nd.

All About 7th Street Burger

7th Street Burger is relatively new to the foodie scene. It opened its first East Village location in 2021, but in that time, it has been affectionately referred to by many as NYC’s best smash burger. While some critics call it “overrated,” the burger joint has since expanded to 10 locations, with no signs of slowing down. As of May 2023, 7th Street has set up shop in FiDi and Chelsea — and if you visit any of its 10 locations after 8PM, you can expect a line wrapped around the block.

So what makes 7th Street so special? This spot is a casual, grab-and-go spot; a quintessential take-out burger joint with limited menu items and even fewer tables. There are four burger options: single cheeseburger, double cheeseburger, single vegan Impossible™ burger, and double vegan Impossible™ burger. Anyone who’s ever struggled with indecision will find their new favorite spot at 7th Street.

Of course, there are the fries — standard, loaded beef, and loaded Impossible™ fries, the latter two topped with American cheese, grilled onion, and beef (or Impossible™ beef). Drink options are slim too, with just water, Mexican Coke, and Mexican Sprite up for grabs.

But perhaps what really landed 7th Street on the map is the prices. The single cheeseburger rings up at just $6.50, with the double at $9.50. For our vegetarian friends, the Impossible ™ burgers are a little pricier but still affordable, the single priced at $8 and the double priced at $11.50.

For those looking for a sweet treat to accompany a burger and fries, OG banana pudding, Ubenanas, and Cream n’ Cookies half-pints from local company Baonanas will also be sold at the Hoboken 7th Street location. The spot offers 33+ rotating flavors of banana pudding, and already has a Jersey City storefront.
