Owned by Amazon, Whole Foods isn’t just bringing a market to JC; it’s also planning on opening up its Northeast Headquarters on Jersey City’s waterfront.

“The Whole Foods team have also chosen the waterfront space of Harborside 3 as their new Northeast headquarters, which supports the strength of the Jersey City market,” Crockett explained.

Opening a Whole Foods in Jersey City is hardly a new idea. The original deal came about several years ago, but was squashed in 2017 when the proposed location for the site was deemed “contaminated.”

At the time, Whole Foods representatives remained hopeful that a market near the Grove Street PATH Station would become a reality. “We remain as committed as ever to bringing the highest-quality natural and organic foods to Jersey City,” Ted Kwong, Whole Foods Northeast Regional PR Coordinator said at the time.

In February, Co-Star News reported that Mack-Cali Realty Corp. was concentrating on negotiating leases “with potential clients like Amazon’s Whole Foods,” which revived the WF rumors. Michael DeMarco, chief executive of Mack-Cali, confirmed the lease negotiations to Co-Star.

Beyond Jersey City

And Jersey City isn’t the only Hudson County area in talks with Whole Foods. Neighboring Weehawken had its own Whole Foods 365 deal — a kind of discounted Whole Foods outpost — on the table. Lately, no one seems to know where that deal is going. Back in January, Whole Foods shut down production on all its new Whole Foods 365 locations, which leaves the Weehawken location to-be-determined.

The developer, Mack-Cali already owns a number of properties on the waterfront, including Harborside, the “city within a city” that features office buildings, restaurants, shops, apartments, and a Hyatt Regency.

Ever since Amazon acquired Whole Foods in 2017, food prices have been dramatically lowered. With exclusive offers for Prime member shoppers, Amazon was able to decrease food prices yet again back in April of this year.
