Just like that, summertime is over, and it is time to gear up for fall. While the seasons are changing, your efforts in giving back to the community don’t have to. Grab the kids, your friends, fur babes, or ride solo and lend a helping hand to those who need it in Hudson County. Check out the events below. Keep reading for all the volunteering opportunities in Hoboken + Jersey City for September 2019.

September 1st — Backpack Sunday: Free Haircuts and School Supplies {472 Bergen Avenue, Jersey City}

The New Hope Missionary Baptist Church is hosting free haircuts and a school supply drive. Limited spots are available for haircuts — if interested, please respond here to claim a spot.

September 1st — Back to School House Party Bash {655 Newark Avenue, Jersey City}

Project Living Out Loud presents the Back 2 School House Party Bash where guests are asked to bring school supplies that will be donated out to the community. The fun begins at 8:00PM.

September 3rd — Shelter Night {300 Bloomfield Street, Hoboken}

The local Rotary Club is set to serve dinner at the Hoboken Homeless Shelter. For those who are able, servers are in need for this evening. Dinner will be served at 4:00PM.

September 4th — Let’s Talk Sustainable JC {140 Newark Avenue, Jersey City}

Sustainable chats and art are in the works for this event. SJC is hosting an end of summer gathering to bring like-minded sustainability folks together. Tune in to what’s happening in Jersey City. Make new friends or discuss a neighborhood project on your mind. Suggested donation is $5 to attend. The first drink will be comped while supplies last. September 4th — Hoboken Historical Museum Gala Early Bird Tickets {225 River Street, Hoboken}

Save the date for the Hoboken Historical Museum Gala on November 8th. Early bird tickets are on sale now through September 4th at a discounted rate of $100. Post-September 4th, tickets will be on sale for $150. This years’ gala will benefit the museum’s education initiatives which has been an on-going mission of those involved in this great event. September 5th — Activating the Abandoned Railroads of Jersey City {350 Warren Street, Jersey City}

Activating the Abandoned Railroads of Jersey City is a collaborative effort between CoolVines + BAPC. This event will be a great opportunity to learn about the initiative that aims to preserve the historical Bergen Arches and the process to activate a network of walk and bike paths in Jersey City. September 6th  — Cans for Cancer {322 2nd Street, Jersey City}

Lucky 7 bar is happy to partner with Cans for Cancer. Starting at 8:00PM, $4 cans of beer will be available with all proceeds going to the John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center.

September 7th — Volunteer Gardening {1 Audrey Zapp Drive, Jersey City}

Park beautification is needed throughout the month of September at Liberty State Park. No prior experience is necessary. Companies and non-profit groups, as well as those seeking to volunteer outside of Saturdays should contact head gardener, Maria, for more information. September 7th — Yappy Hour {215 Washington Street, Hoboken}

Join the Liberty Humane Society and Tally-Ho every Saturday in September for Yappy Hour.  Enjoy $10 pitchers of sangria, mimosas, manmosas, with $1 from each pitcher donated to the Humane Society.

September 10th–Peper Donation Fundraiser for Jubilee Center {938 Washington Street, Hoboken}

Jubilee Center is kicking off their annual Fall event, the Peper Donation Fundraiser. Donations are being collected from local businesses for guests to shop the “store” during the event. 10% of proceeds from this event will benefit the Jubilee Center.

September 11th  — 9/11 Memorial Ruck March {Lincoln Park, Jersey City}

JCRucking will be hosting an 11 Mile Ruck March, dedicated to those lost in the September 11th attacks. Minimum weight of 15 lbs to be carried in a backpack to receive a custom-made completion patch and one free beer voucher for Park Tavern. There is a $50.00 minimum registration fee. All proceeds will be going to an NYC based first responder advocacy non-profit the FealGood Foundation.

September 11th — National Day of Service and Remembrance {2641 John F Kennedy Boulevard, Jersey City}

Alumni of St. Peter’s University are calling for volunteers in their food pantry and clothes closet this September 11th to remember our fallen brothers and sisters as well as celebrate the Mass of the Holy Spirit. Registration is live now  here.

September 11th — National Day of Service: Reservoir 3 Cleanup {113-116 Central Avenue, Jersey City}

Volunteers are needed to assist in the cleaning of one of Jersey City’s reservoirs. Guests are asked to be ready to move around and bring work or garden gloves, wear clothes that may get dirty, a water bottle, and bug spray. September 12th — USGBC Build It Better 20919 {76 Audrey Zapp Drive, Jersey City}

USGBC Build it Better: Jersey City 2019 is U.S. Green Building Council’s inaugural event where leaders from across the country will gather on new ideas. The 2019 conference theme, Building Performance, will feature a morning keynote plus several sessions related to new, existing, and ongoing building performance. September 13th — USGBC Build it Better 2019 {76 Audrey Zapp Drive, Jersey City}

USGBC Build it Better: Jersey City 2019 is U.S. Green Building Council’s premier, signature event for the Middle Atlantic and New England Regions. Over 1,800 USGBC member companies, over 9,900 LEED Accredited Professionals, and hundreds of green building experts are invited to network, learn, and earn continuing education credits. September 15th — Make a no-sew Blanket to Donate {115 Park Avenue, Hoboken}

PJ Library of Hudson County is working to donate blankets to the Hudson Hematology Oncology Center in Jersey City. All supplies will be available, they just ask that you come as you are. Blanket making is open to all ages. For more information email pjlibrryhudson@gmail.com.

September 19th — MFHN Jazz in the City Fundraiser {161 Newark Street, Jersey City}

Enjoy live jazz and more at MFHN’s “Jazz in the City” fundraiser. Proceeds benefit our Healthcare for the Homeless program. Email DBrower@metrofhn.org for tickets and sponsorship opportunities.

September 20th — Educators Funding the Future {337 Newark Avenue, Jersey City}

Welcome back to a new year, teachers of Hudson County. White Eagle Hall will be hosting live music and a fun night with proceeds directly benefiting public schools of Hudson County.

September 20th –Hoboken High School Class of 2020 Tricky Tray {1005 Washington Street, Hoboken}

Join Hoboken High School’s Class of 2020 as they raise funds during their last year. Tickets to attend this nigh of fun are just $25. Guests can expect dinner, dancing, and plenty of vendors from the area. Press your luck at giftcards and baskets all night long.

September 21st — 2019 Walk for Wellness/ Concerts in the Park {1 Audrey Zapp Drive, Jersey City}

Come enjoy a free event with fun for all. Perfect views of Lady Liberty and a walk, in support of mind and body wellness with a concert to follow. The day is hosted by the New Jersey Recovery Advocates.

September 22nd — Liberty State Park Walk + Roll for Wishes {1 Audrey Zapp Drive, Jersey City}

Make-A-Wish New Jersey is set for its annual walk in Liberty State Park. The two-mile walk is complete with views of the Statue of Liberty and NYC Skyline. Activities for kids and families will be available. To secure spots, register here.

September 26th — Dress Your Pup Auction {Jersey City}

S.N.O.R.T. Dog Rescue has an auction of only dog costumes and other dog gear to wear. Think hats, bandanas, and Halloween costumes. For those who have items to donate, feel free to email snortauction@gmail.com by September 15th.

September 27th — New York Torch Relay for Cohen Children’s Medical Center {1 Audrey Zapp Drive, Jersey City}

The community is coming together to raise money for the Cohen Children’s Medical Center. Those interested can sign up to run or simply donate to this worthy cause. For more information or to take action, follow this link here.

September 28th — Bark in the Park 2019 {499 Willow Avenue, Hoboken}

The Liberty Humane Society is hosting its biggest event of the year. BIP brings together animals, food, vendors, costume contests, kids games, and overall fun. The event is free, but fundraising is highly encouraged as this event helps to cover all emergency costs.

September 29th — Red Dress Brunch {1 Castle Point Terrace, Hoboken}

The Kappa Delta Chapter of Alpha Phi will be hosting the Second Annual Red Dress Brunch to raise money for the Alpha Phi Foundation. The Alpha Phi Foundation’s mission is to improve women’s heart health through education, research, and awareness. Brunch starts at 11:00AM. Ongoing Opportunities:

TRUEMentors — Join Jersey Cares in Mentoring + Enrichment in Hoboken every Tuesday from 6:00PM-8:00PM. Volunteers are asked to spend time with, mentor, and manage children ages seven to 17 on a weekly basis.

Hunger Helpers in Hoboken — Join JerseyCare at the Hoboken Shelter every Thursday to serve dinner. Volunteers are asked to dress casually and come excited to serve and engage in conversation with dinner guests. All volunteers must bring one of the following items for donation: garbage bags, coffee, hot/cold cups, paper/plastic plates, toilet paper, napkins, utensils {especially forks}, and/or laundry detergent. Volunteers are needed from 11:00AM-3:00PM daily.

Big Brothers Big Sisters — If you have interest in fostering an on-going relationship with a local student, Big Brothers Big Sisters has the perfect opportunity. To start, head to their website to fill out an application before the interview process to ensure that you are a good fit. Time commitment is at least one year.

America Needs You — Apply to be a 2019 America Needs You {ANY} Mentor Coach today. ANY Mentors are dynamic leaders in their respective fields willing to help first-generation college students through their higher education and early careers. As a Mentor Coach, you attend Saturday workshops and form a long-term, one-on-one mentoring relationship with a first-generation college student, while becoming part of a vibrant network of industry-diverse professionals. Liberty Humane Society {235 Jersey City Boulevard} — Join the exemplary staff at Liberty Humane Society as an LHS Ambassador. Ambassadors are asked to assist in ensuring the shelter facility is organized, clean, and welcoming as this is imperative for placing animals in forever homes. Volunteers are needed morning, afternoon, and evenings. Click here to start the application process. Additionally, every Wednesday, the Liberty Humane Society offers low-cost wellness clinics for pets. Times between 4:00PM-6:00PM can be secured online. Walk-in pets are seen on a first-come, first-serve basis. Review this list for information on available services.

Deliverance Children’s Ministry {3 Armstrong Avenue, Jersey City} — Deliverance Children’s Ministry is looking for volunteers in various capacities including activities coordinator, social media coordinator, carpenter/painter, maintenance/housekeeping assistance, community beautification coordinator, and more. DCM was founded out of the desire to develop leadership and activism in children and youth. For more information click here.

Better Tomorrows {471 Pacific Avenue, Jersey City} — ESL tutors are needed at Better Tomorrow. Better Tomorrow is asking for mostly Spanish-Speaking individuals who are looking to improve their English skills to use published curriculum materials to match students’ reading, speaking, and writing skills. Young Cosmetologist Program {70 Pamrapo Avenue, Jersey City} — The Young Cosmetologist Program is free and open to all students who have an interest in cosmetology as a career option. Volunteers are needed on Friday evenings from 4:00PM-6:00PM to facilitate tutor sessions and help with homework.

Jewish Institute for Global Awareness {80 Grand Street, Jersey City} — The JIFGA is looking for volunteers to enhance the organization’s visibility and its ability to get the mission out to the general public. The position involves writing, editing, marketing, and public relations efforts. Material to be produced may include press releases and other marketing collateral. Family Promise of Hudson County {324 Communipaw Avenue, Jersey City} — Family Promise of Hudson County provides temporary homes for Hudson County families experiencing homelessness. Day volunteers are needed from 7:00AM-6:00PM and evening volunteers are needed from 6:00PM-6:00AM. Day tasks include assisting in the office and managing the needs of the families while evening tasks include spending time with the families, cooking or bringing dinner, and even sleeping over. Jersey City + Harsimus Cemetery — Volunteers are needed at the Jersey City + Harsimus Cemetery to assist with grounds beautification. Tasks include pulling weeds, assisting with the ANGELS Garden, and caring for the goats on the grounds. Visit the site for more information.

Hoboken Volunteer Ambulance Corp {707 Clinton Street, Hoboken} — As the only all-volunteer ambulance corp in Hudson County, the Hoboken Volunteer Ambulance Corp truly values support from the community. Get involved with this great organization that helps to save lives daily.
