Reflecting on the African American Spirituals Discussion

The eminent scholar W.E.B. Du Bois once described African American Spirituals as “the most beautiful expression of human experience.” Remarkable art is sometimes created out of a place of pain and conflict. Though the Spirituals were born from the experience of enslavement in the United States, they had an interesting revival in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries before leaving the footprints for other musical forms that would follow. Join historian Dr. Lindsey Swindall for an afternoon of reflecting upon and listening to this poignant music. The event is Sunday, March 28th at 4:00PM, and will be live-streamed on YouTube/Facebook/Twitter, with very limited in-person attendance, with masks and social distancing required. Point of Action: New Art Installation at Crane Park
Starting Thursday, March 25th
Head over to Crane Park for a new art installation! Montclair residents and artists Nina Cooke John and Charlie Spademan are bringing the installation to Montclair at no cost to the township for about four to six weeks. The installation consists of nine aluminum-framed pavilions on six-foot concrete circles — illustrating the social distancing we have been adhering to — with ropes that are intertwined and part to allow people to step into the frame. In the center, a “spotlight” illuminates the person and creates a safe connection to others inside other frames, as well as passersby. Cooke John is the designer, while Spademan will be installing Point of Action. During the holidays, the public art installation was at the Flatiron Public Plaza on 23rd Street in New York. Womyn’s Werq Exhibit at Studio Montclair Gallery

This exhibition—an exhibit in honor of Women’s History Month—is a hybrid of both virtual and onsite components of art pieces serving as visual narratives based on the mantra that the personal is political. “Womyn’s Werq”, described by curator Donna Kessinger as an “old school,” LGBTQIA-friendly, radical feminist art exhibition, features over 60 pieces of artwork including videos, sculpture, and two-dimensional creations in a great variety of mediums, there will also be special installations in the gallery windows. MAM was founded in 1914 and was the first museum in New Jersey to grant access to the public + focus only on art. Ways to Give Back Locally
Pound Animal Welfare Society {PAWS}
Hundreds of animals need adoption across the state of New Jersey. For over 41 years, the Pound Animal Welfare Society has been helping place homeless animals. PAWS does not have a facility to house animals in need, but the support of generous volunteers makes the work possible. In addition to fostering animals, supplies are needed. Hoboken Food Pantry
The Hoboken Food Pantry is always accepting individual donations including through their Wish List. Contactless donations can be made through The Food Pantry’s Amazon Wish List. Items ordered on The Wish List will be sent directly to The Food Pantry. Nearly 25% of the Hoboken Community relies on the help of the Hoboken Food Pantry, which is a part of the Hoboken Community Center. Its pantry is only stocked and distributed through the support of the community. The Food Pantry needs non-perishable food and personal hygiene items such as toothpaste, instant oatmeal, shelf-stable milk, deodorant, shampoo, canned pasta, cereal, and peanut butter—to name a few. Hoboken Family Alliance
One of the oldest non-profits in Hoboken, the Hoboken Family Alliance is a resource for children and families in the Mile Square. HFA typically puts on various events and provides opportunities for children to learn and play in a safe environment while providing families with various needs necessary resources. The Hoboken Shelter hosts 50 guests nightly and serves more than 1,000 meals throughout the week. As a full-service community partner, the Hoboken Shelter is a necessary resource within the neighborhood. The Shelter is always in need of donations and support to help keep its doors open and welcoming to its guests. Hudson County American Red Cross
The American Red Cross has been ready to respond in times of disaster for decades—and the COVID-19 crisis is no different. More than ever, the American Red Cross is in need of volunteers to help us all get through this time together. While they have tons of different opportunities, the opportunity they are naming “most urgent” in the North Jersey area is as a Volunteer Driver. Drivers are needed to safely transport lifesaving blood from local blood drives to hospitals. Volunteers are asked to commit to 2-4 shifts per month with each shift being about 4 hours. All volunteers must have a valid driver’s license, at least 3 years of a clean driving record, and should be able to lift at least 45lbs. The Community FoodBank of New Jersey (CFBNJ), a member of Feeding America®, is the leading anti-hunger and anti-poverty organization in the state. What started as a modest enterprise in the back of our founder Kathleen DiChiara’s station wagon in downtown Newark in 1975, became an incorporated non-profit in 1982 and has grown to two warehouse facilities in Hillside and Egg Harbor Township, the combined size of five football fields. Pokémon GO Fest is Coming to Jersey City This June
Gotta catch 'em all! Good news for Pokémon fans — the 2025 Pokémon GO Fest locations were recently announced, and it's coming to Jersey City this summer. Details are slim as of now, but what we do know is that Chilltown's Pokémon GO Fest will take place from June 6th through 8th, 2025. Read on for what we know so far about Jersey City's first-ever Pokémon GO Fest happening in 2025.
The Details + About Pokémon GO Fest
Pokémon GO shared via its website on Monday, January 6th that the annual Pokémon GO Fest will be taking place in three locations this summer 2025 — all of which are different than last year's locales.

This year's festivities will include a Jersey City Pokémon GO Fest — happening from Friday, June 6th through Sunday, June 8th, 2025. The exact location has yet to be announced, but this post will be updated with any further details. Per the website, ticket details and more information will be released in March.
Pokémon GO Fest's will also take place in two other cities for 2025. The Osaka, Japan event will run from Thursday, May 29th through Sunday, June 1st. The Paris, France fest will happen shortly after the Jersey City one from Friday, June 13th through Sunday, June 15th. This will be the first time that Jersey City and Paris will host Pokémon GO events.
A global Pokémon GO event normally takes place following the individual events — stay tuned to the website for more details on that.
In 2024, the events took place in New York City, Sendai, Japan, and Madrid, Spain.
Pokémon GO Fest orginated in Chicago, Illinois in 2017 and has since expanded across the world. The events have become a popular way for Pokémon fans to connect with others and explore. Per Dexerto, the fest involves physical events in specific cities that are set across multiple days, all followed by a global event where everyone can participate. Previous Pokémon GO Fests have included the debut of new Pokémon and forms. Locals can expect a day of adventuring to find all of the different Pokémon's Jersey City has to offer through the mobile game.
The mobile game Pokémon GO stems from the Japanese media franchise, Pokémon, which consists of the ever-popular trading card game, various video games, animated series and movies, and more. Per Pokemon.com, Pokémon are "creatures of all shapes and sizes who live alongside humans." Some of the most popular Pokémon include Pikachu, Charizard, Mewtwo, and over 1,000 more.
