If you live in downtown Hoboken, you’ve either heard somebody complain — or complained yourself — about the lack of grocery stores in this part of town. It’s never fun to lug your groceries home a great distance, and residents have been hoping for more options to open up. These residents were happy to learn that Sprove Market Place, which currently has a Jersey City location, would be coming to Hoboken at 333 River Street. The store put up signage saying that it was hiring back in May of 2022 and we thought that it would be opening soon, but signage has since been taken down and  Sprove Market Place has now confirmed that it will not be opening a Hoboken location. Read on for updates about Sprove Market Place.

What We Know

For those who may not know, Sprove Market Place opened its first location in Jersey City back in 2017.  Sprove is attached to the 70 Columbus apartment building located at 70 Christopher Columbus Drive in the downtown area. In addition to standard grocery items, Sprove’s Jersey City location also features a hot and cold food bar for customers with tables to sit and eat at. Beer, wine, and spirits are also sold at this location.

“We believe in people – especially family and friends – and more often than not, we want to spend our time with people alongside good food and drinks,” Sprove previously said on its website. “We’ve taken that belief and laid it as our groundwork when we opened Sprove Marketplace in 2017. Family-owned and friendly. We’ll focus on the food and drinks at the table so you can continue on in conversation and laughter.”

Hobbs Inc

Back in May of 2022, we found out that Sprove’s new Hoboken location would be opening at 333 River Street. Though an exact opening date was unknown, it appeared that Sprove was getting ready to open its doors. The market was hiring a number of positions, including cashiers and cleaners, according to a sign posted to the storefront.

Locals have since noticed that signage was taken down at Sprove’s Hoboken location, and “For Lease” signs have been placed in the window. It has been that way for several months now.

We reached out to the Jersey City location, and they confirmed with us that Sprove Market Place will not be opening in Hoboken — they were not able to give us a reason as to why. The Jersey City store remains open at 70 Christopher Columbus Drive.
