Following the birth of her daughter in 2018, Kelli Brown, a Hoboken resident, came to realize how unsustainable raising a child can be, especially when it comes to clothing since children grow out of items so quickly.

Frustrated with how difficult and time-consuming secondhand shopping for quality items could be, Kelli set out to make changes in her life that would reduce her environmental footprint.

And with that, Kelli set out to create an improved experience for buying second-hand items — a new spot for children’s secondhand clothing in town called Bounce Mkt — located in the Monroe Center in Hoboken.

Kelli’s work background is in innovation consulting, where she works with large corporations to design new products and services, customer experiences, and business models. In February 2021, she left her job to pursue Bounce Mkt full-time with the assistance of a part-time associate and local mom, Jo Ann, who helps to keep everything running smoothly.

“I was constantly seeing reports and headlines about the consequences of climate change that my daughter will have to face when she is my age,” Kelli told Hoboken Girl. “It led me to actively seek out small changes in my own life to reduce my environmental footprint. And I was frustrated to find out how difficult, time-consuming, and unreliable secondhand shopping can be.”

As of late November, Kelli opened her clothing shop, Bounce Mkt, which sells pre-loved children’s clothing in excellent condition. Items can be found online and in-store — with the brick-and-mortar being located in the Monroe Center at 720 Monroe Street in Hoboken.

What Shoppers Can Find at Bounce Mkt

Bounce Mkt buys and sells pre-loved children’s clothing in excellent condition, from brands parents know and love — such as Andy & Evan, Ralph Lauren, Crewcuts, Kate Quinn, Boden, Pink Chicken, and Hanna Andersson. Each item is freshly laundered and ready for another round of memory-making moments. Bounce Mkt meets you where you are, to make buying and selling pre-loved clothes an effortless and seamless experience (including offering free delivery and pickup to local residents on Fridays + Saturdays if you have clothing to sell).

The new Hoboken shop offers local pick-up and delivery services in Hoboken, complimentary pick-up services for selling, and, best of all — outright pay-outs, drop-offs without appointments, and no limits on item seasonality or quantities. “It’s a one-stop-shop for closet clean outs with donation drop-offs,” Kelli shared with us, and “recycling is also available for clothes not sold.”

All inventory can be browsed and purchased in-person or online — which is clutch if you’re not local at the moment, but still want to buy quality and practice sustainable shopping habits.

“Fundamentally, we aim to give local parents a shopping experience that is as effortless, trusted, and enjoyable as shopping new,  but with the added benefit of being sustainable,” Kelli told Hoboken Girl

“Motivating people, particularly those who usually shop new for their kids, to buy pre-loved clothes instead is a BIG challenge that requires a mindset shift, but that is what makes it interesting. I think there are lots of different things we can do to change the experience and change perceptions, and I’m really excited to experiment with new and different approaches.”

The Perks of Shopping Pre-Loved

Instead of buying new, shoppers can take advantage of the convenience, quality, and enjoyment of shopping in-store, with the added benefit of being more eco-friendly. Traditional secondhand shops often only take limited quantities and season-specific clothing, but Bounce Mkt goes above and beyond by offering local pick-ups and deliveries, the ability to shop both online and in-person, pay-out/pricing transparency, immediate pay-outs, flexible acceptance procedures, and donation/recycling drop-offs.

This means Bounce Mkt can pick up that collection of Christmas sweaters you’ve been hanging onto so that other local shoppers can enjoy them this year (or next)!

Shopping secondhand through Bounce Mkt is even easier than peer-to-peer marketplaces by doing all the work of pricing, listing, photographing, and shipping for the seller (because even though selling online seems like a good option, it can be totally overwhelming). When all is said and done, Bounce Mkt simplifies the process without sacrificing quality.

“People may not realize this but the amount of water required to make a single cotton shirt is about the same as one person’s drinking water for 2 ½ years. So it really isn’t enough to just not put clothes in the trash, we need to make fewer new clothes,” Kelli said. “I find it incredibly exciting and rewarding to be building a business that is designed to prove reuse can be better than new.”
