As of mid-May, the eatery welcomed local residents and has been sharing new items that have been added to the menu on its social media pages. Read on to learn more about Poor Man Vegan in Jersey City.

The History

Prior to opening shop in Jersey City, Poor Man Vegan began as a catering company based in Clark, NJ that catered vegan food and baked goods to local events and private parties. Since beginning operation in March of 2019, Poor Man Vegan has taken off and has been delivering its popular cupcake orders non-stop.

The inspiration behind the brand stemmed from the owner’s own experience as a vegan. Christopher Stokes, who manages the company alongside his wife Mary Stokes, shared, “Since a very young age, I’ve always loved animals. Growing up, I ate what my parents fed me and it always grossed me out when I would eat meat but not knowing any better and being a kid, I just ate it. I was a vegetarian for most of my adult life until finally going vegan 8 years ago. My only regret….not doing it much sooner!!!”

In mid-April, PMV announced on social media that they are “working hard to get things ready” for the opening of the café in Jersey City. In just a month, the owners turned the Monticello Avenue space into a cozy yellow-and-green-themed restaurant and filled the location with delicious vegan food. PMV joins other well-known cafes on the street including The Cottage, Baonanas, and Snapdragon Coffee.

The Menu

Poor Man Vegan is becoming a hot spot for their various empanadas served fresh daily including beef, chicken, barbecue chicken, spinach and cheese, taco, and sloppy joe. Lunch options include the classic Beyond burger and Beyond cheeseburger, vegan grilled cheese, and chicken nuggets. All burgers are served on a vegan pretzel bun with a side of fries.

To satisfy a sweet tooth, patrons can select from the variety of cupcakes (vegan vanilla or chocolate), brownies, cookies, ube mason jar cupcakes with macapuno on top, or the lemon blueberry and coffee cake muffins.
