The Hudson County Chamber of Commerce announced that the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will expand PATH service as part of a $45 billion 2026-2035 Capital Plan titled, “A Decade of Big Ambition”. The plan includes upgrades to air travel at John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia, and Newark airports, seaports, bridges and tunnels, and the World Trade Center. Most notably, in mid-2026, Hoboken PATH will begin direct service to WTC on weekends, along with direct service from JSQ-33rd Street. The PATH has made previous headlines for frequent disruptions to service and station closures throughout 2025. Read on to learn more about what the new funding could mean for PATH service out of Hoboken and Jersey City.

A Decade of Big Ambition

Of the $45 billion allotted in the plan, $2.6 billion will be allotted to PATH improvements. Per Port Authority, the new PATH funding will allow for service increases with all four lines operating daily, increased service during rush hours and weekends, and installation of fare-gates to combat fare evasion. Some of the biggest renovations include $100,000 proposed to be spent on fare-gates and infrastructure upgrades, $50,000 on roof replacement at the Journal Square Transportation Center, $50,000 on a contact rail replacement program, and $50,000 on a tunnel track and drainage program, to name a few.

The Hudson County Chamber of Commerce president, Emory Edwards, stated that the increased weekend service, including direct service from JSQ-33rd and HOB-WTC, will begin in mid-2026. Per Fox 5, here’s an abbreviated timeline of the changes:

  • March 2026: Journal Square-33rd Street line from Hoboken will double the number of trains on weekends; on weekdays, the Hoboken-World Trade Center line will increase trains
  • May 2026: weekend service from Hoboken to the World Trade Center and 33rd Street will return; late-night service will double on all lines
  • March 2027: increased service on the Newark-World Trade Center and Hoboken-World Trade Center

Regarding negotiations with Port Authority, Edwards shared the following:

Club Pilates 2023

“For several months, the Hudson Chamber led a strong push for improved weekend and off-peak PATH frequency. Weekend ridership now exceeds pre-pandemic levels, requiring service to be adjusted to reflect current needs. Overcrowding, long wait times, and platform congestion have directly affected local business, tourism, retailers, commuters and residents. Reliable transit is critical for economic growth, to respond to congestion pricing, and to prepare for FIFA World Cup 26TM.”

Also outlined in the plan is a 25-cent single-ride fare increase for passengers effective May 3rd, 2026, with a proposed additional 25-cent increase in 2027, 2028, and 2029 to take effect the first Sunday of each January. The fare increase proposal maintains reduced fair for senior riders and riders with qualifying disabilities at half the price of the standard single-ride fare.
