The Closure

Locals have been speculating over the past few weeks if Panela — as well as the speakeasy below, Perico — have closed after noticing it has been closed during its usual open hours. A source close to the spots shared with The Hoboken Girl a few weeks back that both quietly closed in August, and that a new spot is coming to the space. The spots were located at 36-42 Newark Street in Hoboken.

HG reached out to Panela and Perico to confirm the news in August, and were first told that the two spots would be reopening soon. We reached out again this week, and our email bounced back, seemingly confirming the closure.

This post will be updated with any further information as we receive it.

About Panela + Perico

Harborside Sport + Spine

Formerly world fusion restaurant Monroe’s, and before that, Biggie’s Clam Bar, the space at 36-42 Newark Street in Hoboken rebranded into a Latin restaurant called Panela in fall of 2022. The food and drink menu, as well as the interior design, was an ode to Latin American countries, serving up tropical cocktails and dishes. Executive Chef Roberto Carnero brought his Peruvian influence to the food, with dishes like shrimp + clams, Peruvian chicken, ceviche, seasonal empanadas, and more.

A little over a year later, Panela’s downstairs speakeasy-style Agave bar — Perico — debuted in the space. The spot, which was also adorned with vibrant colors and florals, featured over 50 cocktails made with Casamigos and Agave spirits. The murals inside portrayed animals typically found in the jungle and trees displayed on the walls, and were created by a local artist.
