A Temporary Fare Surcharge of 5.5%
New York Waterway announced to the public on Monday that there will be a fuel surcharge added to ferry fares, increasing costs by an average of 5.5%. According to NY Waterway, the surcharge is needed to help cover the increase in petroleum costs as a result of global events.
In a statement released on Monday, NY Waterway President and CEO Armand Pohan explained that the company’s fuel costs have increased by 80% since January. “Fuel constitutes a substantial part of our overall operating costs,” he explained in the statement. “In these extraordinary circumstances, this adjustment will enable us to maintain the high level of service our riders expect.”
The price increase will take effect on Monday, May 11th. There’s no proposed end date to the increase, but NY Waterway said it will update customers.
This follows a recent fare increase rolled out by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for PATH service, which has been effective as of May 4th, 2026. The PATH fare increase has affected all ticket types and comes as the Port Authority continues a series of infrastructure projects and service improvements.
