New Jersey Declares State of Emergency on 7/31 Due to Extreme Weather

A State of Emergency went into effect across all 21 counties in New Jersey at 2PM on Thursday, July 31st, 2025. The Garden State may see potential flash flooding, severe thunderstorms, multiple inches of rainfall, and high-speed wind gusts. What to Know

On Thursday, July 31st, New Jersey Acting Governor Tahesha Way declared a statewide State of Emergency, which went into effect at 2PM. Residents are warned of “potential for flash flooding, severe thunderstorms, intense rainfall, and damaging wind gusts,” which can result in “landslides, rock slides, and flooded roadways” across the state, per a press release. There may be one to three inches of rainfall, with localized amounts of 5 to 7 inches.

“Beginning this afternoon, we are expecting severe thunderstorms to bring heavy rainfall and damaging wind gusts with the potential for flash flooding across the state,” Acting Governor Way said in a press release. “I urge all New Jerseyans to remain alert, follow all safety protocols, and monitor the proper channels for the duration of these storms. Residents should remain off the roads and indoors unless absolutely necessary.”
