There are too many coffee shops in town, said no one ever {well maybe we have, but won’t admit it}! For many of us, coffee is more than just part of our breakfast meal, it’s a way of life. But not to fret, downtown Hobokenites, there’s another to add to the list — a new coffee shop has come to town and has set up shop at 230 Willow Avenue, the new neighbor of the beloved brunch destination Zach’s. It will be officially open on June 3rd. Keep reading to learn more about MOJO Coffee Company’s story and what treats to expect on the menu.

The Background Story

Hobbs Inc

The MOJO owners are Hoboken natives and coffee lovers who clearly love being a part of the local community. According to MOJO’s website, the idea was to bring the coffee they love to the city they love, and MOJO was born.

“We’ve enjoyed countless cups of Jo both locally and around the world, creating memories and sharing coffee with family and friends. We sought to create a space where friends can catch up, locals can relax with a good book, and professionals can comfortably work,” the owners shared. “Our mission is to create vibrant cafes that reflect, improve, and inspire our communities.”

The Menu

While most coffee shop menus vary but have a similar overall vibe, two of the main coffee brews that stand out in the coffee world are the Mojo House Blend and the Rio Azul.

The Mojo House Blend is a rich drip and espresso brew — blended with beans from Brazil, Papua New Guinea, and Central America that exudes a delicious hazelnut aroma with a taste of chocolate.

The Rio Azul is harvested from the Huehuetenango Region in Northern Guatemala. The beans are grown near the Rio Azul River, and this coffee is a medium to light roast with citrus and rye aromas and a taste of milk chocolate. Other coffee options include macchiatos, cortados, flat whites, lattes, espressos, iced coffee, and shots. For added flavor, choices include vanilla, hazelnut, and caramel.

Of course, if dairy isn’t your thing, fret not — oat, soy, and almond milk are available.

Another noteworthy part of MOJO is the “Nitro” section on the menu. Safe to say if you’re in need of a pick-me-up on a Monday morning, opt for one of the nitrogen-rich brews — specifically the Nitro Cold Brew, Vanilla Nitro Cold Brew, or the Nitro Hibiscus Tea.

MOJO’s specialty drinks are also something to write home about. There’s a Mocha Latte, the perfect drink for chocolate lovers; a Turmeric Latte, made from a blend of freshly ground turmeric, pink peppercorn, ginger, allspice, lemongrass, and black pepper; and a Masala Chai Latte, made from ginger, cinnamon, green cardamom, cloves, black peppercorn, and organic loose-leaf black tea.

Additionally, there is a hot tea option with a variety of flavors available as well as an iced tea with a seasonal hibiscus flavor.

As far as the carb situation goes, customers can expect a selection of locally sourced, sweet, and savory pastries offered daily.

The Atmosphere

Once we’re allowed inside, you’ll find that MOJO Coffee Company is a quaint, chic, and modern cafe. The neutral palette provides a calm and airy environment, with fun, playful patterns on display — beginning with the gorgeous exposed brick wall, black and white palm tree wallpaper, and plaid throw pillows.

Marble-inspired tables line up in front of an instantly iconic neon sign reading “OK, but first coffee,” perfect for Instagram posts sitting under the sign, coffee in hand, if that’s your thing.

No need to wait until they officially open their doors to sample the savory coffee blends, either — you can order a 12 oz. MOJO House Blend for local delivery on the website. But we’re looking forward to welcoming MOJO to the neighborhood soon!
