Jersey City has no shortage of delish Mexican cuisine spots — Taqueria, Gringos, and Orale, just to name a few. With the influx of residents moving to downtown JC, it was only a matter of time until the Journal Square area started to open new restaurants. Enter, Mezcal Kitchen on Newark Avenue. This new BYOB Mexican spot is serving up authentic Mexican dishes and also some more Americanized ones. Read on to find out more about Mezcal Kitchen, serving up delicious Mexican fare in Journal Square.

The Vibe

Mezcal Kitchen has a booming first location in Bayonne {at 482 Broadway}, and that location has done so well that the owners were ready to move onto their second location in 2019.

The Journal Square location — 665 Newark Avenue to be exact —is becoming a local go-to for everything Tex-Mex. Having opened in January 2019, the rustic, Spanish décor of the restaurant transports you to Mexico from the moment you walk.

The Owners

Owner and chef, Roberto Isla is a smart entrepreneur alongside his wife Paola. They have been in the Bayonne community for many years and were excited about expanding into JC. In 2018 the couple signed a contract with the NJ Teamsters Football Club to be exclusive sponsors and vendors at the soccer stadium serving up MK’s delicious dishes.

The Drinks

At the moment, the Jersey City location does not have its on-site liquor license {yes, deceiving with Mezcal in the name}, but that isn’t really a big downer. Bringing wine, tequila, or cervezas of your own is allowed at this locale and def saves on the overall tab, depending on your level of lush. Regardless, Mezcal Kitchen’s list of virgin drinks is great to add to any dinner or pour some BYOB into. The restaurant also offers an array of Mexican sodas like the toronja {grapefruit flavored} and the mandarina {manderine flavored}.

The Food

Tacos, tostadas, flautas, fajitas — the list goes on.  Mezcal Kitchen also boasts the infamous Mexican quesadilla — not to be confused with your typical quesadilla which Mezcal calls “The American Quesadilla.” The Mexican is a thick, handmade corn tortilla sort of resembling a gyro that they make to perfection. Another dish that is not often seen on the menu is the huaraches: one large pinto bean and corn tortilla, paired with a meat of choice along with radishes, queso, cream, avocado, and lime. Also completely Instagramable, FYI.

For those looking for something lighter, try the watermelon salad with jalapeño dressing. MK also offers two types of ceviche — the signature one is the mixed ceviche, consisting of calamari, shrimp, various fish, jalapeño, lime, and cilantro. Truth be told, it’s probably you’ll have to stop yourself from slurping the bowl. Another crowd favorite is the Mexican-style corn on the cob which is slathered in mayo, cheese, chile, and lime.

There is no shortage of protein or filling choices at Mezcal Kitchen either. Get your carbs fix with pollo, mushrooms, skirt steak, chorizo, spicy pork, shrimp, carnitas, or cauliflower just to name a few. To keep the choices going, you can pick from crispy, crunchy, or soft tacos, too. For a sizzling fajita dish, the options are either shrimp, chicken, steak, or veggies.
