About Martha’s

Martha’s was established in 2016 by Jersey City firefighter Leo “Connie” Wilson. He was born and raised in Jersey City and loved being a chef who could bring his culinary expertise to the community. Martha’s was named after Leo’s late mother, Martha Wilson. Connie’s passion was to serve the community, and he did that while being a firefighter and a restaurant owner.

Connie passed away in March of 2020, but before he died, he was assured by his nephew Antonio and his spouse Alexis Cartagena that they would be the ones to keep Martha’s open and thriving.

Alexis shared with Hoboken Girl, “The touching part was him being able to witness and attend the reopening. We did everything we needed to do to gain the knowledge and expertise to enter into the restaurant industry.”

In August 2019, the restaurant was renovated and reopened with Alexis and Antonio at the helm. The space has a modern vibe with an Insta-ready garden wall with a neon light of ‘Martha’s’ in script.

Alexis and Antonio were both born and raised in Jersey City, right around the corner from Martha’s, where their families still reside. They are committed to the neighborhood where they have strong roots, and being a staple to the community has meant so much to them and their staff. Alexis said that there is comfort in knowing the love and support from neighbors and fellow business owners is always there.

Alexis and Antonio’s vision is to bring comfort and love into every meal at Martha’s. The restaurant offers catering services and recently has been working with the city and a local senior citizen home to provide brunch. These types of moments are the ones that touch their hearts because they can directly feel the impact they have on the community and build relationships around food that go beyond a restaurant. This holiday season, Martha’s will host a toy drive, with all donations going to a local community center.

The Menu

A meal from Martha’s may as well be from Grandmother’s house. The food is fresh and flavorful and prepared in straightforward ways. The restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch seven days a week. Monday through Saturday the hours are 7AM to 3PM and on Sundays from 7AM to 2PM.

While the menu is heavy on seafood with Southern flavors, we’re still in New Jersey. The breakfast menu has both the classics every Garden Stater knows and loves plus some Southern imports that can’t be missed. Customer favorites include fish and grits that can be made with fried whiting, catfish, or grilled shrimp.

The salmon cakes are another popular breakfast item, along with traditional staples such as egg platters, crispy home fries, bagels, egg and cheese breakfast sandwiches, Taylor ham + cheese, and much more.

Martha’s also offers a large selection of omelets such as the meat lover’s omelet made with ham, sausage, and bacon, or the veggie omelet, piled high with fresh spinach, onion, peppers, and mushrooms. Other classics such as French toast, pancakes, avocado toast, and breakfast wraps are also available.

For lunch or brunch, order one of the popular sandwiches, such as the chipotle chicken sandwich or cheesesteak. The lunch menu also has a ‘grilled’ section with items served on rolls or wraps, such as grilled pesto chicken, hamburgers, turkey burgers, and BBQ chicken to name a few.

The chicken wing platter and hearty fresh salads are other menu items to consider. Martha’s also recently introduced fresh juices to the menu, which include the Green Machine (cucumber, celery + apple), or the Sunrise (carrots, ginger + pineapple). There are daily specials, so keep an eye out for what creativity comes out of the kitchen.

Martha’s is currently open for takeout and delivery only. Patrons can place orders ahead online, or use third-party delivery apps. Follow Martha’s on Facebook and Instagram to stay up to speed.
