On Tuesday, July 16th, many New Jersey residents reported a loud bang and felt rumbling, akin to an earthquake. Social media site X, formerly known as Twitter, was ablaze with questions asking if it was an earthquake, but sources could not confirm seismic activity, and, according to the United States Geological Survey, it was NOT an earthquake. So, what was that loud noise we just heard in New Jersey? Experts are now saying it may have been a sonic boom. Read on for what we know.

Update as of 5:41PM on July 16, 2024:

According to NBC New York, experts at NASA have shared that the it may have been a meteor. As a result of the reports, it was able to come up with a rough determination of the trajectory of the meteor. The fireball was first sighted over the New York Harbor moving 34,000 miles per hour before it descended at a steep angle, NASA said. The space agency said it estimates the meteor passed over the Statue of Liberty before disintegrated 29 miles above midtown Manhattan.

The Details

Mercury may not be in retrograde currently, but the sound of the loud boom and shakes were heard throughout the area of NYC + Hoboken and Jersey City. A Hoboken resident said on Instagram “People in my building (12th/Clinton) are reporting hearing/feeling a very loud bang around 11:20 am. Any reports? People are saying everything shook,” she shared with The Hoboken Girl via DM.

All the way down at The Jersey Shore, Monmouth County residents were reporting the same experience, according to the AP Press. Reddit users in that area, according to APP, were sharing first-hand accounts, including one person saying they saw a red streak in the sky. Others thought it might be a fireball, or a sonic boom.

While the USGS said that today’s incident was not an earthquake, as it checked manually for proof, it did state that it was likely a sonic boom. If you haven’t heard that term before, it is described as an impulsive noise similar to thunder, caused by an object moving faster than sound — about 750mph at sea level. This can be caused by an aircraft, and sometimes even a meteor. On the US Airforce website, an additional example described is “an aircraft traveling through the atmosphere continuously produces air-pressure waves similar to the water waves caused by a ship’s bow”.
