Local restaurants are coming up with new, innovative ways to navigate the waters during the current pandemic — from stepping up their delivery game to utilizing sidewalk space to create an outdoor dining experience. Light Horse Tavern in Jersey City is one of the many local businesses that has gotten creative during this time. Light Horse recently introduced its Lobster Garage in the restaurant’s actual garage in June as a way for customers to enjoy seafood favorites to go, such as its signature lobster rolls, shrimp po’boys, cod burgers, mussels, and more. Here’s more about Paulus Hook’s latest addition, Light Horse Tavern’s lobster garage.
The Lowdown on the Lobster Garage
Light Horse Tavern decided to transform its garage into a trendy seafood joint due to restrictions on bars and restaurants surrounding the current pandemic {seriously, points for creativity}. The Light Horse team knew it had to adapt quickly to the changing times, and fortunately, the owner, Bill Gray, is an engineer with creative ideas, like the one to transform an extra space in the restaurant. And just like that, the lobster garage was born.
Before the transition, the garage was used as a service station for outdoor seating, along with deliveries and wine storage. “It’s entirely built to create a safe environment for our guests which includes a service counter with a large opening garage door allowing people to feel that they are not in a closed space environment while ordering their food,” Bill’s son, Ryan, explained. Seating is available on a first-come-first-serve basis surrounding the garage.

The Menu
The Lobster Garage menu offers fresh seafood including oysters from Fisher Island and Glidden Point, as well as Light Horse Tavern’s signature fish and chips and lobster rolls. The menu is essentially a condensed version of the full restaurant’s offering, giving locals the opportunity to enjoy seafood favorites to go, in addition to burgers, sandwiches, desserts, and more. There are also cocktails, wine, and beer on tap to accompany your seafood meal.
Pricing is reasonable, but do expect to pay higher prices for the fresh lobster and seafood dishes. But take it from the locals, the food here is 100% worth the few extra bucks

Of course, Lobster Garage wouldn’t be here without Light Horse Tavern. Light Horse is a JC locale that boasts a menu designed to satisfy any craving from brunch to dessert. In terms of actual food, Light Horse serves everything from savory red wine risotto and baked meatloaf to seafood favorites such as shrimp cocktail, Maine lobster tail, a variety of fresh oysters, and more. The lobster garage is located next to Light Horse Tavern on 199 Washington Street in Jersey City. It is open for breakfast from 8:00AM–11:30AM, for lunch and dinner Sunday through Thursday from 11:30AM–10:00PM, and Friday and Saturday until 11:00PM.
