Arrest Made in Hoboken Stabbing on 3/16

Hoboken Police have confirmed reports of a stabbing incident that took place on Saturday, March 16th. One victim was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and has been treated and released.  On Friday, March 22nd, Hoboken Police announced an arrest in the case.  Read on for what we know about the incident.

About the Incident

A Hoboken Girl reader messaged the team, asking if we knew anything about the incident. Team HG reached out to Marci Rubin, Senior Public Information Assistant for Hoboken’s Department of Public Safety. She provided the following statement:

“I can confirm that Hoboken Police responded to a stabbing incident on Saturday, March 16th, at approximately 4AM, near the intersection of Jefferson and Fourth Streets.

According to HPD, the victim and his friends confronted a man who they believed to be breaking into a car, and that individual stabbed the 22-year-old victim, who is not from Hoboken. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment, where he remains in stable condition.

Arrest Made 

On Friday, March 22nd, Hoboken Police announced the arrest of a suspect and shared more details about the incident. According to a press release from the department, the suspect, 21-year-old Randy Barrett, Jr., of Jersey City, turned himself in to the Hoboken police on March 20th and was transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.  Hoboken law enforcement officers connected Barrett, Jr. to another car break-in in the same area at the same time as the stabbing and issued two warrants for his arrest on March 19th. Barrett, Jr. was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault (2 counts), possession of weapons for unlawful purposes, unlawful possession of weapons, theft, and burglary.

The press release also contained more details about the stabbing itself. “On March 16, 2024, at approximately 4:15 a.m. Det. Sgt. Anthony Russo, Sgt. James Barbaro, and Police Officers Nicholas Protopapadakis, Michael Straten, Aaron Font, Arturo Gonzales, and Frank Losurdo responded to the area of Jefferson and Fourth Streets on reports of a stabbing. When they arrived on the scene, they located a 22-year-old victim, who is not from Hoboken, with stab wounds to his chest. Sgt. Barbaro and Officer Font rendered life-saving aid, by applying a chest seal and administering oxygen until the Hoboken Volunteer Ambulance arrived and transported the victim to an area hospital. The victim was treated for his injuries, which included a collapsed lung, and was released a few days later.”

This latest incident comes after an unusual uptick in carjackings in Hoboken, with three already taking place in 2024. None of the victims in the three carjackings had injuries serious enough to need medical attention, and arrests have been made in one out of the three cases, with persons of interest identified in the other two.
