With spring right around the corner and locals ready to get back outside, there’s some timely news for Hoboken walkers, runners, and cyclists. The City of Hoboken has officially reopened a section of the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway, along with a brand new multi-use path, just in time for the warmer days ahead. Read on for what we know about the reopening and what it means for the waterfront.

The Latest on the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway Reopening

On March 6th, 2026, the City of Hoboken released a press release announcing the reopening of a key section of the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway, along with a temporary multi-use path along Sinatra Drive. The reopening restores public access to a portion of Hoboken’s waterfront corridor just in time for the spring season. According to the press release, “The temporary multi-use path on the east side on Sinatra Drive is designed to accommodate pedestrians, runners, and cyclists traveling along Hoboken’s waterfront corridor from approximately Fifth Street to Sinatra Drive North, following a year of construction to replace the Sinatra Drive bulkhead, which limited public access”.

In the recent press release, Mayor Emily Jabbour shared a statement about the reopening, saying, “Our waterfront is one of Hoboken’s greatest public assets, and reopening this section of the walkway and providing a temporary new multi-use path means residents and visitors can once again enjoy the area safely and comfortably. While much of the work completed here is below the surface, it represents a major investment in the long-term safety, resilience, and accessibility of our waterfront. I want to thank the engineers, construction crews, and City staff who worked to restore this section of the waterfront and reopen it for the community.”

What We Previously Covered About the Waterfront Closure

Our team first covered issues along this stretch of the waterfront back in June 2024, when a sinkhole opened on Sinatra Drive after a major thunderstorm moved through Hudson County. The road between 7th and 9th Streets was temporarily closed as crews made repairs, and barriers were later installed along parts of the waterfront so engineers could investigate the stability of the seawall and surrounding infrastructure.

By spring 2025, the City announced a larger reconstruction plan after discovering significant erosion beneath portions of the concrete seawall along Sinatra Drive and the waterfront walkway. As part of the Waterfront Reconstruction Project, the eastern lane of Sinatra Drive from approximately 15th Street to Sinatra Drive North closed starting April 10th, 2025, and remained closed throughout construction while crews worked to stabilize and rebuild the area through fall 2025.
