One New Jersey non-profit organization is dedicated to ending veteran homelessness in the state, and Hoboken has become a model for its goals. The Foundation for Sustainable Veteran Housing is launching a social media fundraising campaign to build facilities in all of New Jersey’s 21 counties that will be similar to Hoboken’s American Legion Post 107, an innovative facility with residences and support services for veterans in one location. Read on for more about the Give Me 5 Campaign and how you can help support veterans in New Jersey.
About the Campaign
The Foundation for Sustainable Veteran Housing (FSVH) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to combating homelessness among Veterans in the US. FSVH is dedicated to identifying, rebuilding, and maintaining current Veteran facilities across the country. By raising awareness and fundraising, FSVH is currently working to improve and maintain veteran housing and facilities in several communities throughout New Jersey.

The campaign calls on supporters to donate $5, post about it on social media, and challenge five friends to do the same. The effort harnesses the power of community and gratitude through small acts of generosity that create a lasting impact — helping fund new veteran housing projects that provide safe, supportive homes for those who’ve served our nation. There are currently 40 units of veterans housing ready to break ground between projects in Hoboken and Westfield, and the campaign will help make those projects a reality — giving 40 veterans in New Jersey a safe, stable home.

Participants can join by visiting the website to donate $5, share their post, and tag five friends using #GiveMe5ForVets. “No veteran should ever be without a home,” said Joe Mindak, Executive Director of FSVH. “They served our country and fought for our freedom, and now it’s our turn to fight for them. Give Me 5 lets everyone step up – give $5, tag and challenge five friends, and help give a veteran the security and dignity they deserve.”
Hoboken Model
Hoboken’s American Legion Post 107 is what the FSVH hopes is the model for future veterans housing. The renovation of the facility included housing alongside other social and support services for veterans.
This building was completely renovated after Superstorm Sandy damaged much of the original structure. To ensure that this level of destruction never happens again, many precautions were taken, like flood-proofing the floors and using water-resistant building materials. During the renovations in the early 2010s, the team realized that this Post could be even more than its initial use. Post 107 now has six residences for veterans.
Every residence comes fully furnished, and each has its own bathroom and kitchen, providing a great sense of independence for those who call it home. On the second level, veterans are able to gather in the bar or living room areas for a sense of community. Local artists have donated artwork for the walls, adding local color to the atmosphere. Happy hours provide a time for vets to come together and connect, or the space can be rented for private events and parties.
The Hoboken Girl had the chance to connect with one resident, Juan, who shared more about his journey to Post 107 and his time serving the United States of America.
He also shared how the American Legion Post 107 stepped up in a dark time. Juan was one of many veterans who had experienced homelessness after returning from service. Despite holding a steady job, he was unable to make ends meet, which landed him on the streets until help stepped in.
