Here at Team HG, we’re always looking for the best foodie items around town. From scalloped potato fries to homemade Pop-Tarts to cookie croissants, we’ve featured some of our team’s favorite picks in Hoboken and Jersey City. This month’s roundup is focused on one thing: carbs. We’re talking locally-made sourdough bread, pasta, cinnamon sugar doughnuts, and more. Read on for the 10 Hoboken + Jersey City food items we’re loving right now, carb edition.
Sourdough Society | Jersey City

What began as a quarantine activity for Jersey City couple Sophie and Giota has transformed into a community-rooted micro-bakery called Sourdough Society, which is now serving some of the most sought-after loaves in Chilltown. The loaves are made from four simple ingredients — organic bread flour, organic sea salt, homemade starter (levain), and filtered water — and come in flavors like chocolate chip (pictured above), organic cheddar jalapeño, cinnamon sugar, and more in addition to the classic plain loaf. There’s also organic pizza dough and chocolate chip cookie dough.

Shay Dough Sourdough | Hoboken
Shayna Faye is the baker behind Shay Dough, a local sourdough business. She started her baking business as a hobby since she has always loved creative expression through art. What started as a hobby quickly rose into something more, and by February 2025, she began sharing loaves with the community. Shay Dough sourdough is available in a variety of flavors including sesame seed, everything, chocolate chip, olive, croissant, cinnamon raisin, and pink confetti. MOJO Coffee Company in Hoboken recently hosted Shayna’s first pop-up, in which her sourdough sold out in just 16 minutes.
Cacio e Pepe Toast from Green Pear Cafe | 93 Grand Street, Hoboken
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and it’s important to us that, at some point, you order this exact breakfast from Green Pear Cafe. The newly opened cafe — owned and operated by two Hoboken firefighters — has a menu full of classics, but the cacio e pepe toast is an inventive reimagining of the popular pasta dish. It’s two pieces of fluffy focaccia topped with scrambled egg (generously peppered), crispy prosciutto, and shaved parm. It’s gluttonous, it’s indulgent, and it’s one of the best things we’ve eaten in a while.
Gourmet Toasts from Toastique | 1450 Washington Street, Hoboken

This health food restaurant is newer to the Washington Street food scene, and it’s one of our favorites for gourmet toasts, both sweet and savory. On the menu, customers can expect to find options like PB Crunch (honey-roasted peanut butter, bananas, strawberries, blueberries, berry jam, granola, peanuts, honey drizzle, and mint on walnut raisin toast), spicy crab (lump crab, melted Swiss + fontina, sriracha aioli, tomato, bibb lettuce, jalapeño, microgreens, and a lemon twist on rustico toast), 3-cheese Italian (prosciutto, melted Swiss + fontina with roasted garlic onion jam, topped with dressed arugula on jalapeño cheddar toast), and more.
Cinnamon Sugar Twist from Do Good Donuts | Hoboken

Emily Wirt is the mastermind behind Do Good Donuts. Her sweet creations (usually delivered by bicycle) have become famous throughout Hoboken. Most Saturdays, Emily pops-up at the Downtown Farmer’s Market and serves up a variety of sweet treats, but we always come back for the cinnamon sugar twist. This is a staple on her menu and it’s clear that it’s a best-seller for a reason. The classic combination of cinnamon and sugar on top of a pillow-y soft, yeasty dough is both nostalgic and a newfound treat.
Mozz Sticks from 10th + Willow | 935 Willow Avenue, Hoboken

10th + Willow is known for its menu of creative drinks, traditional Guinness pints, community events, and cozy atmosphere. While the HG team enjoys pretty much all of the spot’s light bites, especially its wings, we’ve been loving the mozz sticks as of recently. Some may argue that the cheese pull is longer than the Mile Square. For $16, locals can order six mozzarella sticks with a side of marinara sauce.
Focaccia from Otok Bakery | 506 Grand Street, Hoboken
It doesn’t get much better than handmade bread baked in a brick, 120-year-old oven and that’s exactly what the team at Otok prepares. The chewy-yet-light slices of focaccia are made with love, and are one of Team HG’s favorite afternoon pick-me-ups. And, the catering trays of the focaccia are maybe one of the best-kept secrets in Hoboken and a sure-fire way to be the hero of your next potluck gathering.
Hayley’s Donut | Hoboken

There are many gluten-free desserts these days, but one that we have been continuously obsessed with is Hayley’s Donut. Hayley’s Donut is the brainchild of Hoboken resident Liz Sperman, who, after years of research and development, launched her line of doughnuts free of wheat and gluten (and honestly, they’re better than Dunkin, that’s how authentic they taste!). You can find Liz and her team at pop-ups in and around Hoboken, Jersey City, as well as shopping pre-order on her website. (PS: Order the blueberry cheesecake and the chocolate glaze — you will not regret it!)
Pistachio Rigatoncini from Sorellina | 1036 Washington Street, Hoboken

Eating your greens at Sorellina takes on a whole new meaning with the pistachio rigatoncini. We have never tried anything quite like this, and the chefs here knew exactly what they were doing when they designed this mouth-watering dish. The chewy, homemade green pistachio pasta is drenched in a buttery, savory, and slightly creamy sauce with sprinkles of cracked pistachios, crispy applewood smoked bacon, and shrimp. It hits every taste bud with a spark of distinctive complementary flavors that we’ve never seen anywhere else. A true *chef’s kiss* moment.

Bonus: The “Dirty Gabagool” at LTD Pizza + Bar | 225 Hudson Street, New York City

While this pick comes to us from across the Hudson, the creator behind it is a Hoboken local. Hannah Taub, also known as @talkdirty2yourfood and founder of Sunny Side Up Social, currently has a pizza collab with NYC restaurant and bar LTD Pizza. Named the “Dirty Gabagool,” the crispy cheese pie is topped with gabagool, sundried peppers, whipped ricotta, and lots of parmesean cheese.
