First Street Sundays, an initiative that aims to create a vehicle-free, no-parking zone in Hoboken, is back for 2024. Each Sunday from 10AM-8PM, a portion of First Street (from Washington Street to Garden Street) will be closed off to vehicular traffic. This yearly tradition, organized by local Hoboken businesses, kicked off September 8th and runs through October 27th. The goal, ultimately, is to encourage residents to get outside and support small businesses. Keep reading for more details about Hoboken’s 2024 First Street Sundays.
A Brief History
First Street Sundays began back in September 2019 as a way to create a family-friendly, vehicle-free, pedestrian-only zone and improve business for local restaurants on First Street. The initiative was first created by the Hoboken Business Alliance and the City of Hoboken, and is now a private event organized by local Hoboken businesses that obtained the necessary permits from the City.

This initiative encourages residents to get outside, support local businesses, and work to decrease traffic-related fatalities. This vehicle-free zone focuses on First Street in Hoboken, and gives locals a chance to stroll around Hoboken without any traffic, shop at local stores, and dine on the street at a variety of different participating restaurants — creating a vehicle-free pedestrian plaza.
