Last January, an array of small, stained-glass houses started popping up throughout Hoboken, unannounced. The mysterious little structures, aside from being a cartoonishly perfect place to live, were the work of Brooklyn-based artist Tom Fruin and part of an initiative from Hoboken Business Alliance (HBA). This year, HBA is continuing its tradition of outdoor artwork with an installation of Electric Dandelions from artist Abram Santa Cruz and Los Angeles arts collective Liquid PXL. The massive, glowing structures will be unveiled at Hoboken’s Pier A Park this Friday, February 23rd. Read on to learn more about the Electric Dandelions coming to Hoboken.

The Details

Pier A Park and the Monroe Center Plaza will soon be aglow with towering, electric dandelions. Per a press release, the sculptures are the work of artist Abram Santa Cruz and Liquid PXL, a Los Angeles-based art collective. The Electric Dandelions have previously been featured at several music festivals across the world: Burning Man in 2016, Illuminate Adelaide in Australia, Firefly Music Festival in Delaware, and the River of Light winter festival in Liverpool.

Standing at 28 feet tall, there will be a total of 10 dandelions throughout town, all of which are made out of steel and translucent LED lights. According to the press release, the dandelions will be off during the day, transforming at night into a spectacle of light and motion. HBA hopes the installation “activates the Hoboken waterfront and Sinatra Drive, as well as the area around Hoboken’s key Ninth Street/Congress Street Light Rail Station…” The greater hope, though, is to create “a pleasant environment to enjoy the outdoors as the weather transitions to spring.”

The Electric Dandelions are lighting up this Friday, February 23rd at sundown (around 5:45PM – 6PM). The Friday event is private, but HBA invites locals to Pier A Park and the Monroe Center on Saturday, February 24th to witness the Electric Dandelions illuminate.
